Widgets are small panels that sit on your iPhone home screen or lock screen and display useful information at a glance — things like today's weather, your upcoming calendar appointments, the time in another city, or a rotating display of your favorite photos. You can see this information without opening any app.
iOS (the iPhone's operating system) includes some built-in widgets, but a free app called Widgetsmith dramatically expands your options. With Widgetsmith, you can create widgets that show: - A specific photo or photo album - A custom clock in your choice of style and color - A daily or weekly calendar view - Weather conditions - Step count from your Health app - A daily reminder or affirmation you write yourself - And many more options
Widgets come in three sizes: small (about the size of 4 app icons), medium (the width of the screen, height of 2 app icons), and large (the width of the screen, taller). Each size shows more information.
Lock screen widgets are smaller and appear above or below your clock on the lock screen. These are great for quick-glance information like the weather or your next calendar event.
Setting up a widget takes a few minutes, but once placed it updates automatically in the background. Many people use widgets to replace the need to open apps for quick information — instead of opening the Weather app, you glance at your home screen.
Widgetsmith is free to download with most features included. A paid subscription unlocks a few additional widget types, but the free version is excellent for most uses.
