    1

    Download Widgetsmith

    ~15s
Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for "Widgetsmith." Download and install the free app by David Smith. Open the app after installing.
    2

    Create a widget inside Widgetsmith

    ~33s
In the Widgetsmith app, tap Add Widget at the bottom and choose a size: Small, Medium, or Large. A new widget will appear in a list. Tap on it to edit what it shows. Tap the widget type (for example, "Default Date") to change it to something else — like Weather, Photo, Calendar, or Health. Browse the list and tap the type you want. Then tap away from the sheet to confirm.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you choose a weather widget, the app will ask for permission to access your location so it can show local weather. Tap Allow While Using App to enable this.

    3

Add the widget to your home screen

    ~37s
Go to your iPhone home screen. Press and hold on any empty area of the screen (or press and hold any app icon and tap Edit Home Screen) until the apps start wiggling. Tap the plus (+) button in the top-left corner. Scroll down the list and tap Widgetsmith. Choose the size that matches the widget you created, then swipe to find the specific widget you made. Tap Add Widget. The widget appears on your home screen. Tap Done to stop editing.

    Warning

Make sure you pick the same size in the home screen widget picker that you created in the Widgetsmith app. A small widget created in Widgetsmith will only appear in the small widget slot.

    4

Add a widget to your lock screen (iPhone with iOS 16 or later)

    ~25s
Press and hold on your lock screen until it shows the Edit button at the bottom. Tap Customize, then tap Lock Screen. You will see widget slots below the clock (rectangular strip) and circular slots above the clock. Tap a slot to add a widget. Scroll through the list of apps and choose Widgetsmith. Pick the widget you want and tap it to add it to that slot.
    5

Edit or swap your widget anytime

    ~19s
To change what a widget shows, open the Widgetsmith app, tap the widget in the list, and edit it. Changes appear on your home screen automatically — you do not need to remove and re-add the widget. To remove a widget, press and hold it on your home screen, tap Remove Widget, and confirm.

Widgets are small panels that sit on your iPhone home screen or lock screen and display useful information at a glance — things like today's weather, your upcoming calendar appointments, the time in another city, or a rotating display of your favorite photos. You can see this information without opening any app.

iOS (the iPhone's operating system) includes some built-in widgets, but a free app called Widgetsmith dramatically expands your options. With Widgetsmith, you can create widgets that show: - A specific photo or photo album - A custom clock in your choice of style and color - A daily or weekly calendar view - Weather conditions - Step count from your Health app - A daily reminder or affirmation you write yourself - And many more options

Widgets come in three sizes: small (about the size of 4 app icons), medium (the width of the screen, height of 2 app icons), and large (the width of the screen, taller). Each size shows more information.

Lock screen widgets are smaller and appear above or below your clock on the lock screen. These are great for quick-glance information like the weather or your next calendar event.

Setting up a widget takes a few minutes, but once placed it updates automatically in the background. Many people use widgets to replace the need to open apps for quick information — instead of opening the Weather app, you glance at your home screen.

Widgetsmith is free to download with most features included. A paid subscription unlocks a few additional widget types, but the free version is excellent for most uses.
