How to Create a Free Blog or Website on WordPress.com

WordPress.com lets you build a free blog or website without any technical knowledge. This guide walks you through setup, design, and publishing your first post.

Customize your site title and description

In your site settings (look for "Settings" in the left-side menu), enter your site title — the name that appears at the top of your site — and a brief description of what the site is about. These are also used by search engines to describe your site, so make them clear and specific.

Write and publish your first post

Click "Posts" in the left-side menu, then "Add New Post." The block editor opens. Click the title area and type your post title. Below it, click the plus (+) icon to add content blocks — choose "Paragraph" for text, "Image" to upload a photo, or other options as needed. When you're done, click the blue "Publish" button in the top right corner to make your post live.

Warning

Published posts are right away visible to anyone on the internet. If you're not ready to publish publicly, use the "Save Draft" option to save your work without making it public.

Add pages for About and Contact information

Click "Pages" in the left menu, then "Add New Page." Create an About page with a few sentences about yourself or your site's purpose. Add a Contact page if you want visitors to reach you. Pages appear in your site's navigation menu and give visitors a way to learn more about who you are and why you created the site.

There are two different WordPress services and it's important to understand the difference: WordPress.com is the hosted version — WordPress handles all the technical setup and maintenance for you. And you can have a free site up and running today. WordPress.org is the self-hosted version used by developers and businesses who want more control. For most beginners, WordPress.com is the right starting point.

The free plan on WordPress.com gives you a website at an address like yourname.wordpress.com. It includes a wide selection of free design themes, unlimited pages and posts, and basic tools for adding photos and text. If you want a custom address like yourname.com, you'll need to pay for an upgrade, but many bloggers and hobbyists are perfectly happy with the free address.

WordPress.com is well suited for personal blogs, family updates, hobbyist websites, memorial pages, church or community group sites, and small organizations sharing news and information. It handles photo galleries, written posts, pages, and embedded videos.

The interface uses a visual block editor. You add content by inserting blocks, similar to stacking building blocks. There is a block for text, one for photos, one for video, one for quotes, and many others. You don't need to know any code.

Setting up a new site takes about 20 minutes from start to your first published post.
