Create folders to organize your Yahoo inbox

    ~17s
Log into Yahoo Mail on the web at mail.yahoo.com. In the left sidebar, scroll down to "Folders" and click the "+" icon next to it. Give your new folder a name like "Bills" or "Family Photos." Repeat this to create several folders for your main email categories.
    2

    Set up automatic filters

    ~28s
Click the Settings gear icon (top right), choose "More Settings," then click "Filters." Click "Add new filter." You can filter by sender email address, subject keywords, or recipient. Choose which folder matching emails should land in. For example, filter all emails from your bank's email address directly into your "Bills" folder.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: After creating a filter, go back to your inbox, search for old emails from that sender, and move them into the correct folder manually — the filter only applies to new incoming mail.

    3

Check and clean up your Spam folder

    ~19s
Click "Spam" in the left sidebar once a week. If you see any legitimate emails in there, right-click them and choose "Not Spam" — this moves them to your inbox and teaches Yahoo's filter to let future messages from that sender through. Delete everything else in the spam folder to keep it from growing.
    4

Set up Gmail if you want to switch

    ~33s
Go to gmail.com and click "Create account." Choose a new Gmail address (your first and last name with a number is usually available). Walk through the setup steps. Once your Gmail account is ready, go to Gmail Settings > "See all settings" > "Accounts and Import" > "Import mail and contacts" and enter your Yahoo address to import your existing messages.

    Warning

Yahoo will ask you to sign in and grant access during the import. This is legitimate — it's part of Google's official import tool. If you receive an email asking for your Yahoo password outside of this process, do not respond.

Forward new Yahoo mail to Gmail during the transition

    ~20s
In Yahoo Mail, go to Settings > More Settings > Mailboxes > click your Yahoo address > scroll to "Forwarding." Turn on forwarding and enter your new Gmail address. Any new message sent to your Yahoo account will now also arrive in Gmail, giving you a comfortable overlap period while contacts learn your new address.

Millions of Americans have had Yahoo Mail accounts for decades. If yours has grown cluttered and overwhelming — or if you've heard that Gmail might be a better option — this guide covers both: how to get more out of Yahoo Mail right now, and how to make a smooth move to Gmail if that's the direction you want to go.

Yahoo Mail is still a fully functional, free email service. It handles attachments, connects to your contacts, and works on any phone or computer. The free version includes 1 terabyte of storage, which is enough for most people's lifetimes of email. Yahoo Mail Basic (the free tier) does show ads, which some users find annoying. Yahoo Mail Pro removes ads for around $3.49 per month.

To keep your Yahoo Mail inbox manageable, start with folders. Yahoo calls them "Folders" and you'll find them in the left sidebar on the web version. Create folders for categories like "Family," "Bills," "Shopping," and "Medical." Then use "Filters" (found under Settings > More Settings > Filters) to automatically sort incoming messages from specific senders or with specific subject words into those folders. This way, emails from your bank land in your "Bills" folder automatically and don't clutter your main inbox.

The Spam folder in Yahoo Mail is quite aggressive — it's worth checking it once a week for legitimate messages that got caught by mistake. Right-click any misidentified message and choose "Not Spam" to move it to your inbox and train the filter.

If you're considering switching to Gmail, the transition is more manageable than it sounds. Gmail offers free forwarding tools that automatically send new Yahoo messages to your Gmail account for a transition period. You can also import all your old Yahoo contacts into Gmail in minutes. Many people keep their Yahoo address alive for old contacts while using Gmail as their main address going forward.
