Backup Verification

Set up a backup once. Test it the rest of your life. Pick your device and walk through the four checks below.

"Backed up" does not mean "restorable" until you have tested it.

Most backup failures are silent — the icon says everything is fine, the cloud storage is full, and the backup quietly stopped six months ago. Every story of lost photos starts with "I thought it was backing up." A backup you have never restored from is a hope, not a backup.

Verify last backup

1. Check the last iCloud backup time

Open Settings → tap your name at the top → iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups → tap your iPhone. You will see "Last Backup" with a date and time. If that date is older than a week, your backup is stale. Tap "Back Up Now" and wait for it to finish on Wi-Fi.

Test restore

2. Run a real test restore (one photo at a time)

You do not need to wipe your phone to test. Pick one photo you know was backed up. Delete it from Photos → Recently Deleted → Delete permanently. Then go to iCloud.com on a computer → Photos → Recently Deleted (kept 30 days) → Recover. If it comes back, your photo backup is real. For full-restore testing, set up an old retired iPhone or do it the next time you upgrade.

Monthly habit

3. First Sunday of each month — verify

Once a month, walk the path: Settings → name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups. Confirm "Last Backup" is within the past 7 days. If iCloud storage is full (the most common silent failure), upgrade to 50GB for $0.99/month or clear out old device backups you no longer use.

External drive

4. Optional: archive to a computer once a year

Plug iPhone into a Mac or PC → open Finder (Mac) or iTunes/Apple Devices (Windows) → click your iPhone → "Back Up Now" with "Encrypt local backup" checked. This local copy lives on your computer and is independent of iCloud. Good insurance against an Apple ID lockout.

The 3-2-1 rule (worth memorizing)

3 copies of anything you cannot afford to lose. 2 different types of storage (one local drive, one cloud). 1 copy stored offsite (cloud counts; a USB drive at a relative's house counts). Photos of grandchildren, tax records, scanned medical paperwork — these are the things that need 3-2-1. Cat memes do not.

External drive verification, no matter the device

If you back up to a USB drive (Time Machine, File History, manual copies), test the drive twice a year. Plug it in. Open it. Pick three random files from different folders and try to open them. A dead external drive feels exactly like a working one until the moment you need it. Drives last 3-5 years on average — replace before then.
