    The problem: roaming charges

    • Simplest — no extra setup needed.

    Before you leave

    • Download maps for offline use (Google Maps).
    • Download translation app with offline language packs.
    • Note hotel WiFi — use it for calls home.
    • WhatsApp works on WiFi — free calls home.
    • Turn off cellular data if worried about charges.

    eSIM easiest for iPhone users

    If you have an iPhone XS or newer, an eSIM from Airalo is the easiest option. Search the country you're visiting, pay $15–$25, scan the QR code, and you have data for your whole trip. Your US number still works on WiFi calls. No physical SIM swap, no renting a hotspot device. Buy it the night before you leave.
