    Zoom Beginner Tips

    First call. Confidence.

    Setup before first call

    1. Download Zoom app on phone OR computer.
    2. Sign up with email + password (free).
    3. Test camera + mic in app settings.
    4. Test by calling yourself or family at non-business time.
    5. Practice mute button + video button.

    Joining a meeting

    1. Click meeting link in email OR open Zoom app + enter Meeting ID.
    2. Click "Join with Computer Audio" (very important).
    3. Click camera icon to turn ON video.
    4. Click mic icon to mute / unmute.
    5. Wave hello when you arrive.

    Common problems

    • "Can't hear anything" — click computer audio button. Check volume up.
    • "They can't hear me" — check mic icon (should be black, not red).
    • "Video upside down" — Settings → Video → flip.
    • "My face is dark" — sit FACING window. Don't backlight yourself.
    • "It's laggy" — turn off video, audio-only.

    Senior tips

    • Wired headphones improve audio.
    • Phone propped up at eye level (not lap).
    • Lighting on FACE, not behind.
    • Mute when not speaking — kills feedback.
    • Tap "Speaker View" to see whoever's talking large.
    • Live Captions on iPhone (Settings → Accessibility) — auto-subtitles.

    Practice with grandkid

Best practice: ask grandkid for a 15-min Zoom test. They show you tricks. You show them the buttons you've mastered. Builds confidence + connection. Better than YouTube tutorial.
