One of the most satisfying things AI can do is act as a patient, personal tutor on any topic you want to learn about. Whether you have always been curious about how the stock market works, want to understand the history of a place you are visiting, are trying to learn basic Spanish phrases, or want to finally understand how your medication works — AI can explain it clearly, at exactly the level you need, and as many times as you need to hear it.
Unlike a search engine, which gives you a list of websites to sort through, an AI tutor talks directly to you. You ask a question in plain English, and it answers in plain English. If the answer is confusing, you say "Can you explain that in simpler terms?" and it tries again. If you want to go deeper on one point, you say "Tell me more about that part." There is no rushing, no judgment, and no embarrassment about asking basic questions.
AI learning works best when you treat it like a conversation. Start broad, then get more specific. For example: start with "Explain how Social Security benefits work" and once you understand the basics, follow up with "What happens to my benefits if I claim at 62 instead of 67?" Each answer builds on the last.
You can also ask AI to quiz you. After explaining a topic, ask "Can you give me five questions to test my understanding?" The AI will ask questions and tell you if your answers are right, giving you a short feedback loop that helps the information stick.
The free AI tools that work well for learning are ChatGPT (chat.openai.com), Google Gemini (gemini.google.com), and Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com).
