Meal planning is one of those chores that most households never quite master. You walk into the grocery store without a list, buy random things, and three days later you're staring into the fridge with nothing that makes a meal. AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini all work well here — turn this whole process into a 5-minute conversation.
The core trick is giving the AI enough information up front that it produces a useful plan on the first try. Good prompts include the number of people you're feeding, rough budget, dietary restrictions (vegetarian, low-sodium, gluten-free, diabetic-friendly), any allergies, how many meals per week you want (many households only need 4 to 5 weeknight dinners because of leftovers and eating out), cuisine preferences, and a sense of cooking skill level.
A useful starter prompt looks like this: "Plan 5 dinners for a family of 4 this week. Budget around $150 in groceries. One person is vegetarian, no shellfish allergies. We like Italian, Mexican, and Asian flavors. Weeknight dinners should take 30 minutes or less except Saturday, when I can cook for longer."
Once you have the plan, ask for a consolidated shopping list. The AI will combine ingredients across meals so you're not buying three separate half-onions. Ask it to group the list by store section (produce, dairy, pantry, meat) which matches how most grocery stores are laid out.
Two honest cautions. AI can sometimes suggest recipes with imprecise cooking times — verify with a real recipe site for anything unfamiliar. And AI doesn't know what's in your pantry, so tell it up front ("I already have rice, pasta, olive oil, canned tomatoes") so it doesn't put those on the list.
