Improve Your Resume and Write Cover Letters with AI

AI is one of the best tools for job applications in years, but using it well takes a little discipline. The wrong way is to paste a job posting and ask it to write you a resume and cover letter. The right way is to paste your real resume and a real job description, and ask it to help you tighten and tailor what you already have. The difference is the difference between a strong application and one that gets you rejected when the interviewer notices the resume doesn't match the person.

For resume work, AI is excellent at three specific tasks. First, rewriting weak bullet points into strong ones ("Responsible for team meetings" becomes "Led weekly cross-functional meetings for a team of 8, improving delivery predictability by 20 percent"). Second, tailoring the language of your bullets to the job description so keywords line up — most employers run resumes through an ATS (applicant tracking system) that scans for skill keywords. Third, formatting checks — making sure your dates, headers, and lengths are consistent.

For cover letters, AI can produce a solid first draft in 30 seconds if you give it your resume and the job posting. The draft will be bland on purpose — your job is to personalize it with why you want this specific company, a story about relevant experience, and your genuine voice. Ten minutes of rewriting the draft is far faster than starting from scratch.

The one absolute rule: never let AI invent qualifications. If it writes that you "led a team of 12" and you led a team of 3, correct it. If it claims you have Python experience and you don't, cut that line. Embellishment is bad ethics and the first question in the interview will catch you.
