    Using Your Bank's App Safely

How to download your bank's app, set up Face ID login, check your balance, and spot fake banking apps before they steal your money.

    1

Download the official app — from the official source

    ~27s
Only download your bank's app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). Search for your bank's name and look for the official listing — it should have thousands of reviews and show the bank's real website as the developer. Never install a banking app from a link in an email or text message.

    Warning

Fake banking apps exist on both app stores. If reviews are few or mostly negative, or the developer name looks odd, do not install it.

    2

Set up Face ID or fingerprint login

    ~22s
Once installed and logged in, go to the app's Settings and look for "Biometric Login", "Face ID", or "Touch ID". Enable it. This means you can log in by just looking at your phone or pressing your finger — no typing your password every time.

    Quick Tip

Biometric login is actually more secure than typing a password in public where someone could watch over your shoulder.

    3

    Check your balance and transactions

    ~20s
Your home screen in the app should show your account balance and recent transactions. Tap any transaction to see more detail. Get into the habit of checking once a week — the sooner you spot an unfamiliar charge, the sooner you can report it.

    Quick Tip

Enable push notifications for transactions. You'll get an instant alert every time money leaves your account.

    4

Pay bills and set up payments

    ~22s
Most banking apps let you pay bills, transfer money, and set up standing orders. Look for "Payments" or "Transfer". You'll need the recipient's sort code and account number (in the UK) or routing/account number (in the US). Always double-check these before sending.

    Warning

Never send money to someone you haven't met in person, even if they claim to be from your bank, HMRC/IRS, or a well-known company.

    5

    Spot fake banking apps

    ~24s
Signs of a fake banking app: it asks for your full card number and PIN on first setup (real apps never need your PIN); it has spelling mistakes or a slightly wrong bank name; it was found via a link rather than searching the official app store; reviews mention money going missing.

    Warning

If you've accidentally installed a fake app and entered your details, call your bank immediately using the number on the back of your card.

    6

    Log out when you're done

    ~22s
Get into the habit of logging out of your banking app when you've finished. If your phone is lost or stolen while you're logged in, someone could access your account. Most apps have a logout button in Settings or the main menu.

    Quick Tip

Set your phone to lock automatically after 30 seconds or 1 minute of inactivity — this adds an important extra layer of protection.
