How (and Why) to Keep Your Devices Updated

A plain-English guide to updating Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android, and your browser — and why skipping updates is risky.

    1

    Why updates matter

    ~24s
Every update fixes security holes that hackers exploit. Think of it like a lock manufacturer sending you a better lock for free — refusing the update leaves the old, weaker lock on your door. Most successful phone and computer hacks target people running old software. Staying updated is the single most effective thing you can do for digital safety.

    Quick Tip

Updates also bring new features and fix annoying bugs — so there's really no downside.

    2

    Update Windows

    ~20s
Click the Start menuSettings (⚙️) → Windows UpdateCheck for Updates. Windows will download and install any available updates. If it asks to restart, save your work and let it restart — updates only fully install after a restart.

    Quick Tip

Enable "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" in Windows Update settings to also keep Word, Excel, and Edge up to date.

    3

    Update macOS

    ~18s
Click the Apple menu (🍎) in the top-left → System SettingsGeneralSoftware Update. If an update is available, click "Update Now". macOS will download in the background and prompt you to install when ready.

    Quick Tip

You can also enable "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" to have macOS download and install updates overnight.

    4

    Update your iPhone

    ~20s
Go to SettingsGeneralSoftware Update. If an update is available, tap "Download and Install". Make sure your iPhone is plugged in and on Wi-Fi first — updates can be large. Updates install while you sleep if you have automatic updates enabled.

    Quick Tip

To turn on automatic updates: SettingsGeneralSoftware UpdateAutomatic Updates → toggle on.

    5

    Update Android

    ~15s
The exact steps vary by phone maker, but generally: SettingsAbout PhoneSoftware UpdateCheck for Updates. On Samsung: SettingsSoftware UpdateDownload and Install.
    6

Update your browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox)

    ~24s
Chrome/Edge: click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right → HelpAbout Google Chrome (or About Microsoft Edge). It will check for and install updates automatically. Safari updates automatically with macOS. Firefox: click the menu (☰) → HelpAbout Firefox.

    Quick Tip

A colored dot or arrow next to the browser menu usually means an update is waiting. Don't ignore it — browsers are a primary target for hackers.

    7

    Set up automatic updates everywhere

    ~22s
The easiest approach: turn on automatic updates on every device and browser. You'll be prompted to restart when needed, but you won't have to remember to check manually. Most updates download overnight and only ask for a restart in the morning.

    Quick Tip

Schedule restarts for a time that works for you — both Windows and macOS let you set "Active Hours" so it won't restart mid-video call.
