How to Set Up Netflix, YouTube, and Streaming Apps on Your TV

Step-by-step guide to watching Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, and more on your Smart TV, Apple TV, Fire Stick, or Chromecast.

    1

    What you need before starting

    ~19s
You'll need: a TV connected to the internet (either a Smart TV, or a TV with a streaming device plugged in), your Wi-Fi password, and an account with the streaming service (e.g. Netflix account). If your TV doesn't have Wi-Fi built in, a $30–$40 device like a Fire Stick or Chromecast will add that ability.
    2

Setting up on a Smart TV

    ~25s
Press the Home button on your remote. Look for an app store (Samsung has "Smart Hub", LG has "LG Content Store", Sony has "Google Play"). Search for the app you want (e.g. Netflix) → InstallOpenSign in with your account details.

    Quick Tip

If you can't find the app store on your TV, look in the manual or search "[your TV brand] how to install Netflix" — the exact steps vary by brand.

    3

Setting up on an Amazon Fire Stick

    ~25s
Plug the Fire Stick into your TV's HDMI port, plug in the USB power cable, and switch your TV to that HDMI input. Follow the on-screen setup to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with your Amazon account. Then go to the Home screen and search for any streaming app to install it.

    Quick Tip

Fire Sticks come with Alexa — you can say "Alexa, open Netflix" or "Alexa, play The Crown" without pressing any buttons.

    4

    Setting up on a Chromecast

    ~22s
Plug the Chromecast into your TV's HDMI port. Download the Google Home app on your phone. Open Google HomeAdd (+) → Set up deviceNew device. Follow the steps to connect your Chromecast to your Wi-Fi. Once set up, you "cast" from your phone or tablet — open Netflix on your phone, press the cast icon (📡), and it plays on the TV.
    5

    Setting up on Apple TV

    ~26s
Connect Apple TV to your TV with the included HDMI cable and plug in the power. Use the remote to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with your Apple ID. The App Store is built in — search for any streaming service and download it. Apple TV also works with Siri: say "Hey Siri, open Netflix".

    Quick Tip

If you have an iPhone, you can use it to automatically transfer your Wi-Fi password to Apple TV during setup — no typing required.

    6

Troubleshooting: if streaming is slow or buffering

    ~28s
Try these fixes in order: (1) Move your router closer to the TV or use an ethernet cable. (2) Restart the TV/streaming device and router. (3) Lower the video quality in the app's settings (e.g. change from 4K to HD). (4) Check if another device is using lots of internet bandwidth (e.g. someone downloading a big file).

    Quick Tip

If you often get buffering, your internet connection might not be fast enough for 4K. Standard HD (1080p) uses much less data and looks great on most TVs.
