    1

Create a free account at chat.openai.com

    ~21s
Open your web browser and go to chat.openai.com. Click Sign up and enter your email address. You will receive a verification email — click the link in that email to confirm your account. Then set a password and you are ready to go.

    Quick Tip

You can also sign up using your existing Google or Microsoft account to skip creating a new password.

    2

Type a clear request in the message box

    ~18s
Once logged in, you will see a text box at the bottom of the screen. Click inside it and type what you need. Be specific — include the purpose, the tone you want (friendly, formal, brief), and any details that matter. Then press Enter or click the arrow to send.
    3

Ask it to write or rewrite an email

    ~23s
Type something like: "Please write a friendly email to my doctor's office asking to reschedule my appointment from Tuesday to Thursday. Keep it short and polite." ChatGPT will produce a draft you can copy and send or adjust to your liking.

    Quick Tip

If the draft is too long or too formal, type "Make it shorter" or "Make it sound more casual" and ChatGPT will revise it.

    4

Paste in an article to get a summary

    ~19s
Find a long article online, select all the text, copy it (Ctrl+C on Windows, +C on Mac), then paste it into the ChatGPT message box (Ctrl+V or +V). Before pasting, type: "Please summarize this article in 3 sentences:" and then paste the text. Press Enter and you will get a quick summary.
    5

    Brainstorm ideas for any topic

    ~22s
ChatGPT is great for generating ideas when you are stuck. Ask things like "Give me 10 ideas for easy dinners I can make with chicken, rice, and vegetables" or "What are some low-cost activities I could do with my grandchildren this weekend?" It will give you a list to work from.

    Warning

Never share your Social Security number, financial account details, or passwords in the chat window.

ChatGPT is a free AI assistant made by a company called OpenAI. It is one of the most widely used AI tools in the world. You talk to it by typing messages, and it responds with helpful text — almost like texting back and forth with a knowledgeable friend who never gets tired of your questions.

ChatGPT is particularly good at tasks involving words and language. You can ask it to help you write an email to your doctor, summarize a long news article, explain a confusing term, come up with ideas for a birthday gift, or help you figure out how to respond to a tricky situation. It can also help you organize your thoughts when you are not sure how to start writing something.

The free version of ChatGPT — available at chat.openai.com — works well for most everyday needs. You do need to create a free account to use it. There is also a paid version called ChatGPT Plus that is faster and has more features, but most people get plenty of value from the free version.

One important thing to know: ChatGPT can make mistakes. It sometimes states incorrect information confidently, so always verify critical facts — especially anything medical, legal, or financial — from an official source. Think of it as a helpful starting point, not a final authority.

The more specific your request, the better the response. Instead of asking "Help me with an email," try "Help me write a polite email to my landlord asking him to fix a leaking faucet." Giving context helps ChatGPT give you something much more useful.
