The Children's Health Insurance Program — known as CHIP — is a federal and state program that provides health insurance to children in families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance. It covers millions of children across the United States.
CHIP typically covers routine doctor visits, immunizations, prescriptions, hospital care, dental care, vision care, and more. Depending on your state and income, you may pay little to nothing for your child's coverage. Some states charge a small monthly premium or a co-pay for certain services, but costs are kept low by design.
Every state runs its own CHIP program and sets income guidelines. In most states, children are eligible if the family earns up to 200% of the federal poverty level, and many states cover up to 300%. Some states have expanded CHIP coverage even further.
CHIP covers children from birth through age 18. In some states, pregnant women are also eligible for coverage through a related CHIP program.
You apply for CHIP the same way you apply for Medicaid — through your state's Medicaid agency, at HealthCare.gov, or through your state's marketplace. The application looks at your family's income, the number of people in your household, and your child's age. If your child does not qualify for CHIP, the application may automatically check if they qualify for Medicaid or for subsidized private insurance.
There is no waiting period once your child is approved — coverage begins quickly. Applications can be submitted at any time of year, not just during open enrollment.
