How to Apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Online

Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people who cannot work because of a serious medical condition. It is funded through Social Security taxes that workers pay throughout their careers. If you or a family member has a disabling condition and has worked enough years in jobs covered by Social Security, you may qualify.

To be eligible, you generally must have a medical condition that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months (or result in death), and that prevents you from doing any substantial work. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a detailed process to evaluate claims, and approval can take several months. Many first applications are denied, but you have the right to appeal.

Before you apply, gather important documents: your Social Security number, birth certificate, medical records and doctor contact information, a list of medications and conditions, your work history for the past 15 years, and tax information. Having these ready will speed up the process significantly.

You can apply three ways: online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at your local Social Security office. The online application is available around the clock and is the fastest way to submit.

The application itself takes about one to two hours to complete. You do not have to finish it in one sitting — the online system saves your progress. Once submitted, the SSA sends your case to your state's Disability Determination Services office, where medical professionals and disability specialists review your records.

Even if you are denied the first time, do not give up. About two-thirds of initial applications are denied, but many people win on appeal — especially with help from a disability attorney, who typically only charges a fee if you win.
