What Is Discord and How to Use It to Stay Connected with Family

Discord is a free group communication app popular with families, communities, and hobby groups. Here's a plain-English introduction for new users.

    1

Download Discord and Create an Account

    ~22s
Search "Discord" in the App Store or Google Play. Install the free app. Tap "Register" and enter your email address, a username (this is your display name), and a password. Verify your email address by clicking the link Discord sends you.

    Quick Tip

Your username is visible to others on the server. Use your real first name or a recognizable nickname so family members know who you are.

    2

    Join a Family Server

    ~24s
If a family member has already created a server and sent you an invitation link, tap the link on your phone — it opens Discord and shows a preview of the server. Tap "Accept Invite" to join. You can now see all the channels in that server.

    Quick Tip

If you have not received an invitation, ask the family member who manages the server to send you an invite link. They can create one in Server Settings.

    3

    Read and Send Text Messages

    ~16s
Tap a text channel (the # symbol means a text channel). You see all previous messages in that channel. Scroll up to see older messages. To send a message, tap the text box at the bottom and type. Press Enter or tap the send button.
    4

Join a Voice or Video Call

    ~27s
Voice channels show a speaker icon (🔊). Tap a voice channel to join — you immediately connect to a voice call with anyone else in that channel. Tap the camera icon to turn on your video. Tap the microphone icon to mute or unmute yourself.

    Quick Tip

You do not need to be invited to join a voice channel — if someone is in the channel, you can tap it anytime to join the conversation. This makes it easy to drop in and chat.

    5

    Customize Your Notifications

    ~16s
Discord can send many notifications — too many for some people. Tap the server name at the top → "Notifications" → "All Messages" and change it to "Only @Mentions" to only be notified when someone addresses you directly. Or tap a specific channel → "Notification Settings" for per-channel control.

Discord is a free app that lets groups of people communicate through text messages, voice calls, and video chats — all organized into channels inside a shared space called a "server." While Discord is best known as a tool for online gamers, it has grown into a general-purpose communication platform used by families, hobby groups, community organizations, book clubs, and more.

If your grandchildren or adult children are suggesting Discord for family communication, this guide explains exactly what it is and how to get started.

Think of a Discord server as a private clubhouse for your group. The server has different "channels" — like different rooms — organized by topic. A family server might have channels like #general (everyday chat), #photos (for sharing pictures), #announcements (for important news), and a voice channel for video calls. Everyone in the server sees and participates in the channels.

Discord is free to use. A paid upgrade (Discord Nitro) exists for extras like animated profile pictures and higher file upload limits, but the free version is fully functional for all communication.

Discord works on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, and in a web browser. You create one account and use it on all your devices.

For families spread across different states or countries, Discord can serve as a persistent family chat room that is always there — unlike a group text that gets buried in notifications, the Discord server keeps all the conversation history organized and searchable. Voice channels let family members drop in and chat whenever they want, like picking up the phone, without needing to schedule a call.
