WhatsApp is a free messaging app that lets you make video calls, voice calls, and send messages to anyone in the world who also has WhatsApp — at no cost beyond your internet connection. It is especially popular for staying in touch with family and friends overseas.

Download WhatsApp from the App Store or Google Play Store. Set it up with your phone number — WhatsApp sends a verification code via text to confirm. Once verified, WhatsApp automatically shows contacts from your phone who also use the app.

To make a video call: open WhatsApp, tap the "Calls" tab at the bottom, tap the phone icon with a "+" to start a new call, select a contact, and tap the video camera icon. You can also start a video call from within a chat — tap the video camera icon at the top of the conversation.

For group video calls with up to 8 people: start a call with one person, then tap "Add Participant" to bring others in. Or create a group chat first, then tap the video icon to call all group members.

During a call, you can switch between front and back cameras, mute your microphone, turn off your camera (audio only), and share your screen. WhatsApp video calls are encrypted end-to-end, meaning only you and the people on the call can see and hear the conversation.
