    Email for Complete Beginners

Everything you need to know about email: sending, receiving, attachments, and staying safe.

    1

    What is email?

    ~15s
Email (electronic mail) is like sending a letter instantly over the internet. It's free, arrives in seconds, and you can attach photos, documents, and other files. You need an email address to send and receive.
    2

    Get a free email account

    ~15s
Gmail (by Google) and Outlook (by Microsoft) are the most popular free email services. Visit gmail.com or outlook.com to create an account. Choose an address like yourname@gmail.com.
    3

    Send an email

    ~15s
Click Compose (Gmail) or New Mail (Outlook). Enter the recipient's email address in the To field. Add a Subject line describing your message. Type your message in the body. Click Send.
    4

    Read and reply to emails

    ~15s
Click an email in your inbox to read it. Click Reply to respond to the sender. Click Reply All to respond to everyone on the email. Click Forward to send it to someone new.
    5

    Attachments

    ~15s
To send a file: click the paperclip icon when composing, select the file from your computer. To open a received attachment: click on it to download or preview. Be cautious with unexpected attachments.
    6

    Organize your inbox

    ~15s
Star or flag important emails to find them later. Delete emails you don't need. Use folders (Outlook) or labels (Gmail) to organize by topic: Family, Medical, Bills, Shopping.
    7

    Stay safe

    ~15s
Never click links in emails from unknown senders. Your bank will never ask for your password by email. Look for spelling mistakes and urgent language — these are signs of scam emails.
    8

    Email on your phone

    ~15s
Set up email on your phone: iPhone uses the Mail app, Android uses Gmail. Your emails sync between all your devices — read on your phone, and it's marked as read on your computer too.
