    Take Good Photos of Your Item

    Before listing, photograph your item in good natural lighting. Take at least 3–5 photos: a front view, back, sides, and close-ups of any flaws (scratches, stains, etc.). Good photos get far more interest than blurry or dark ones. Clean the item before photographing it.

    Create Your Listing

    Open Facebook and tap the Marketplace icon (a little shop storefront at the bottom or top of the app). Tap "+ Create new listing" → "Item for sale." Upload your photos, write a clear title (like "Blue Sectional Sofa — great condition"), enter your asking price, and add a description with the item's dimensions, age, condition, and any relevant details. Set your location and tap "Publish."

    Respond to Messages

    Interested buyers will message you through Facebook Messenger. Respond promptly — buyers often contact multiple sellers and buy from whoever responds first. Answer questions about the item honestly. If a buyer haggles on price and you are open to it, negotiate politely.

    Watch for scam messages that offer to pay more than your asking price, send a check, or want to ship the item. These are almost always scams. Stick to local, in-person, cash transactions.

    Arrange a Safe Meetup

    Meet buyers in a public, well-lit place — a busy parking lot, coffee shop, or even a police station (many police stations have "safe exchange zones" specifically for this). Daytime meetings are safer. Bring a friend or family member if you can. Never invite strangers into your home for the first time.

    Accept Payment and Hand Over the Item

    Cash is the safest payment method for local sales. Count the bills before handing over the item. If accepting digital payment (Venmo, Zelle, PayPal), make sure the money is actually in your account before you hand anything over — ask the buyer to show you the confirmation on their phone.

    Mark the Item as Sold

    After the sale, go back to your Marketplace listing and tap "Mark as sold." This removes it from search results. You can also leave the listing up with "SOLD" in the title as a courtesy to inform anyone who might still see it.

    Facebook Marketplace is a free classifieds section built into Facebook where you can sell items to buyers in your local area. It is similar to Craigslist but easier to use because buyers and sellers can see each other's Facebook profiles, which adds a layer of trust.
