    How to Make a Free Video Call on Facebook Messenger

    Call family and friends face-to-face for free using Facebook Messenger — works on phones, tablets, and computers.

    Install the Messenger app

    Open the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) and search for "Messenger." Download it for free. It is a separate app from Facebook but uses the same login.

    Quick Tip

    Both you and the person you are calling need a Facebook account and the Messenger app (or access to Facebook.com on a computer). Video calls are free over Wi-Fi or mobile data.

    Find the person you want to call

    Open the Messenger app on your phone. Look through your recent conversations, or tap the pencil icon (new message) to search for someone by name.

    Start the video call

    Open the conversation with the person you want to call. Tap the video camera icon in the top right corner. Their phone will ring and you will see them when they answer. On a computer, go to messenger.com and click the video camera icon in the conversation.

    Use the call controls

    During the call, tap the microphone icon to mute yourself, tap the camera icon to turn off your video, or tap the red phone icon to end the call.

    Warning

    If the video is blurry or choppy, move closer to your Wi-Fi router. Poor video quality is almost always caused by a weak internet connection, not a problem with your device.
