    Gather your tax documents

    ~15s
Before you start, collect your W-2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for freelance or retirement income, Social Security statements (SSA-1099), last year's tax return, and your Social Security number and those of any dependents.
    2

Go to IRS Free File at irs.gov/freefile

    ~15s
Type irs.gov/freefile directly into your browser — do not search for it to avoid lookalike scam sites. Click "Use Free Guided Tax Software" to see the list of participating companies. Each has different income requirements and state filing options.
    3

Choose a Free File partner and start your return

    ~18s
Compare the options and click the link to your chosen provider. You will be taken directly to their Free File version. Create an account with your email address and start a new tax return. The software will ask you questions and fill in the forms for you.
    4

    Enter your income and deductions

    ~15s
Follow the step-by-step interview. Enter your wages from your W-2, any other income sources, and answer questions about deductions. The software calculates your refund or amount owed automatically as you go.
    5

    Review and submit your return

    ~17s
Review your completed return before submitting. If you are getting a refund, enter your bank account number and routing number for direct deposit. It is faster and safer than a paper check. Click "Submit" to file. You will receive an email confirmation that the IRS accepted your return.
