    1

Charge the tablet before first use

    ~17s
Plug the included USB charging cable into the tablet and connect it to a power adapter. Let it charge fully — usually 3 to 4 hours from empty. A full battery during setup prevents interruptions. A battery icon in the top right corner shows the charge level.
    2

    Follow the on-screen setup steps

    ~23s
Press and hold the power button on the side until the screen turns on. You will see a setup wizard. Choose your language, then select your home Wi-Fi network from the list and enter your Wi-Fi password. The tablet will connect to the internet and continue setup.

    Quick Tip

Your Wi-Fi password is often on a sticker on the back or bottom of your home router (the box your internet comes from).

    3

Sign in with your Amazon account

    ~27s
Enter the email address and password you use for Amazon.com. If you do not have an Amazon account, tap Create a new Amazon account and follow the steps — it takes about five minutes and is free. Your Amazon account links your tablet to your Kindle books, Prime Video, and any previous purchases.

    Warning

If you are giving this tablet as a gift, set it up with the recipient's Amazon account, not your own — otherwise all purchases will be charged to your account.

    4

Find and download apps from the Amazon Appstore

    ~29s
From the home screen, tap the orange Amazon Appstore icon (it looks like a shopping bag). Use the search bar to find apps by name — for example, "Netflix," "YouTube," or "Facebook." Tap the app you want, then tap Get or the price. Free apps download immediately. The app will appear on your home screen.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Tap the Apps tab at the top of the home screen to see all your installed apps in one place, rather than searching the home screen for them.

    5

Adjust the screen brightness and text size

    ~25s
Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick settings panel. Drag the brightness slider left or right to adjust screen brightness. For larger text throughout the tablet, go to Settings, tap Accessibility, then Preferred Text Size, and choose a larger option.

    Quick Tip

Turning on the blue light filter (called "Blue Shade" on Fire tablets) in the evening reduces eye strain and makes the screen more comfortable to look at in dim lighting.

The Amazon Fire tablet is one of the most affordable tablets available — starting around $50 to $100 — and it is designed with simplicity in mind. It runs a version of Android customized by Amazon, with a home screen that shows your recently used content and a grid of apps. If you are already an Amazon customer, it connects smoothly with your Amazon account, Prime Video, Kindle books, Audible audiobooks, and Amazon Music.

Setting up your Fire tablet takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The main steps are connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, signing in with your Amazon account (or creating one for free), and choosing a few preferences. Amazon has made the setup process very straightforward with on-screen guidance.

The Fire tablet's app store is called the Amazon Appstore. It has a good selection of popular apps — YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Facebook, email apps, and many more — though it does not have every app that appears in Apple's App Store or Google Play. Most apps that are commonly used are available.

The Fire tablet is particularly well suited for watching videos, reading books, video calling with family, browsing the web, and playing casual games. The screen size (7 inches on the basic model, 10 or 11 inches on larger models) makes it comfortable for reading and watching — easier on the eyes than a small phone screen.

The battery typically lasts 8 to 12 hours of regular use, so charging it once a day or every other day is usually sufficient. It charges via a USB-C cable (on newer models) or micro-USB (on older models).
