    Search by Who Sent It

    ~16s
In the Gmail search bar, type: from:name or from:emailaddress — for example, from:mom or from:amazon@amazon.com — then press Enter. Gmail shows only emails sent by that person or address.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can also search for emails you sent to someone: to:emailaddress — for example, to:johndoe@gmail.com

    Search by Subject Line

    ~15s
Type subject:word in the search bar to find emails with that word in the subject. For example, subject:invoice finds all emails with "invoice" in the subject line. Put quotes around multiple words: subject:"doctor appointment" to find that exact phrase.

    Search by Date Range

    ~15s
To find emails from a specific time period, use after: and before: followed by a date in YYYY/MM/DD format. For example: after:2025/01/01 before:2025/03/31 finds all emails from January through March 2025. You can combine with other operators: from:doctor after:2025/01/01

    Find Emails With Attachments

    ~15s
Type has:attachment in the search bar to see all emails that include a file. Combine it with other operators to narrow down: has:attachment from:bank finds emails from your bank that include attached files.
    5

    Use the Visual Search Form

    ~18s
If you prefer not to type operators, click the small down-arrow or sliders icon at the right end of the Gmail search bar. A form opens with fields for From, To, Subject, Date within, and Has attachment. Fill in what you know and click "Search" — Gmail builds the search for you.

    Search Inside Spam and Trash

    ~18s
By default, Gmail search skips the Spam and Trash folders. To include them, add in:anywhere to your search. For example: in:anywhere from:notifications@paypal.com finds PayPal emails even if they landed in spam.

    Warning

Emails in Trash are deleted permanently after 30 days. Search while they are still there if you need to recover something.

If you have used Gmail for a few years, your inbox probably has thousands of emails. Finding a specific one from six months ago can feel impossible — unless you know how to search effectively.

Gmail's search bar does much more than find emails containing a word. You can filter by who sent it, when it was sent, what the subject line was, whether it has an attachment, and more. These search shortcuts are called operators and they work like special commands.

The good news: you do not need to memorize all the operators. Gmail also has a "Search options" panel — a small arrow or icon in the search bar that opens a form where you fill in the fields visually. This is perfect if you prefer not to type commands.

For most everyday searches, two or three simple operators are enough. Knowing how to search by sender and date range alone will find almost any email you are looking for.

All Gmail search operators work the same whether you are on a computer, phone, or tablet. The search bar is always at the top of the Gmail app or website.
