How to Set Up an Apple AirTag to Track Your Keys or Wallet

Apple AirTag is a small disc you attach to your keys, bag, or wallet. Your iPhone can then show you exactly where it is — on a map or with sound. Here is how to get started.

Remove the Plastic Tab to Activate the Battery

    ~15s
New AirTags come with a small plastic pull-tab between the battery and the device. Pull the tab out to activate the battery. You will hear a tone, confirming the AirTag is powered on and ready to pair.
    2

Bring Your iPhone Close to the AirTag

    ~20s
Hold the AirTag near the top of your iPhone (within about 2 inches). A setup card appears automatically on your iPhone screen — similar to how AirPods pair. Tap "Connect."

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If the setup card does not appear automatically, open the Find My app, tap "Items," then the "+" button to add an AirTag manually.

    3

    Name Your AirTag

    ~15s
Choose a name from the suggested list (Keys, Wallet, Bag, Luggage, etc.) or type a custom name. This name appears in the Find My app so you know which item each AirTag is tracking. Tap "Continue."
    4

    Register With Your Apple ID

    ~15s
Your AirTag is linked to your Apple ID. Tap "Register." The AirTag appears in the Find My app under the "Items" tab. It now shows as yours — linked to your account and invisible to others.
    5

    Find a Lost Item

    ~23s
Open the Find My app and tap "Items." Tap your AirTag's name. You see its last known location on a map. Tap "Play Sound" to make the AirTag beep so you can find it by ear. If you have an iPhone 11 or newer, tap "Find" for Precision Finding — your phone uses Ultra Wideband to give you an arrow and distance reading like a compass pointing right to the AirTag.
    6

    Attach the AirTag

    ~18s
Slip the AirTag into a keyring holder or loop (sold separately) and attach it to your key ring or bag zipper. For a wallet, use a slim wallet case or a credit card holder that fits an AirTag. The AirTag itself is water resistant, so it handles rain and splashes without a problem.

Apple AirTag is a small round disc — about the size of a large coin — that you attach to things you tend to misplace: your keys, wallet, purse, luggage, TV remote, or anything else. Using the Find My app on your iPhone, you can see its location on a map, play a sound to find it nearby, or get turn-by-turn walking directions directly to it.

AirTag works through a combination of Bluetooth and Apple's massive network of hundreds of millions of iPhones. If your AirTag is out of Bluetooth range, other people's iPhones nearby anonymously detect it and report its location to you — without anyone knowing they helped. This works automatically and privately.

To use AirTag, you need an iPhone with iOS 14.5 or later (any iPhone 6s or newer purchased in the last several years qualifies). You also need an active Apple ID. AirTag does not work with Android phones.

Each AirTag costs about $29, or $99 for a four-pack. The battery (a standard CR2032 coin battery) lasts about a year. You get a notification on your iPhone when the battery needs replacing.

You can attach an AirTag with a keyring holder, a loop, or a case — various accessories are available at Apple, Amazon, and most electronics stores for $10–$20.
