How to Set Up a New Android Phone

A beginner-friendly walkthrough for setting up a new Android phone from scratch — including your Google account.

1.Turn on your Android phone

Turn on your Android phone

Press and hold the power button on the right side until the screen lights up. Wait for the welcome screen to appear.

Select language and connect to Wi-Fi

Choose your preferred language, then select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password.

Your Wi-Fi password is usually on a sticker on the bottom of your router.

Sign in with your Google account

Enter your Gmail address and password. This connects you to the Play Store, Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. If you do not have a Gmail account, tap "Create account" to make one for free.

Write down your Google account email and password. You will need these to download apps and access your photos.

Transfer from your old phone

You can transfer contacts, apps, and photos from your old phone using a cable or wirelessly. If this is your first smartphone, tap "Don't copy."

Set up a screen lock

Choose a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint unlock. A PIN of 6 or more digits is recommended. Avoid patterns as they are easier to guess.

Check for software updates

Go to Settings, then System, then System Update. Install any available updates to keep your phone secure.
