    1

    Open Google Wallet

    ~17s
Find the Google Wallet app on your Android phone — it has a blue, green, yellow, and red wallet icon. If you do not see it, open the Google Play Store and search "Google Wallet" to install it. Open the app and sign in with your Google account if prompted.
    2

Add a debit or credit card

    ~27s
Tap the "+" button or "Add to Wallet" on the main screen. Choose "Payment card." You can hold your physical card up to your phone's camera to scan the card number automatically, or tap "Enter details manually" and type in the card number, expiration date, and security code. Tap "Save" when done.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Your bank may send you a text message or email with a verification code to confirm the card. Enter that code when prompted to finish setting it up.

    3

    Add a loyalty card

    ~19s
Tap "+" or "Add to Wallet," then choose "Loyalty card." Search for the store name (for example, "CVS" or "Kroger"). Select your store, then enter your loyalty card number or phone number associated with the account. The card will appear in your Wallet and can be shown at checkout by opening the app and tapping the card.
    4

Pay at a store using tap to pay

    ~35s
When you are ready to pay at a store, look for the contactless symbol on the payment terminal (it looks like a sideways Wi-Fi signal). Wake up your phone and unlock it with your fingerprint or PIN — you do not need to open the Google Wallet app. Hold the back of your phone near the payment terminal for one to two seconds. You should hear a beep or feel a vibration confirming the payment went through.

    Warning

Tap to pay only works when your phone is unlocked. This is a security feature — the payment will not go through if your phone screen is off or locked.

    5

Add a boarding pass or event ticket

    ~21s
When you receive a boarding pass or ticket confirmation email, look for a button that says "Add to Google Wallet" or "Save to Google Pay." Tap it and the pass will appear in your Wallet. At the airport or venue, open the Wallet app, find the pass, and show the barcode on your phone screen to be scanned. No paper printing needed.

Google Wallet is a free app on Android phones that stores your payment cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, and other important cards digitally. Instead of digging through your physical wallet at checkout, you can pay by holding your phone near the payment terminal — a process called "tap to pay."

Most major banks and credit unions now support Google Wallet, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards. Many stores that have updated their payment terminals accept tap-to-pay, including Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, McDonald's, and thousands of others. If you see the contactless payment symbol (it looks like a Wi-Fi signal turned sideways) at a checkout, you can use Google Wallet there.

Google Wallet is secure. When you pay, your actual card number is not shared with the store — instead, a one-time digital code is used, which means even if the payment data were intercepted, it could not be used again. You also need to unlock your phone with your fingerprint, face, or PIN before a tap-to-pay works, adding another layer of protection.

Beyond payments, Google Wallet can store loyalty cards like your CVS ExtraCare card or Starbucks Rewards card, as well as boarding passes from airlines, event tickets, and even digital driver's licenses (in supported states). Everything is organized in one place.

Google Wallet comes pre-installed on most Android phones. If you do not see it, search for it in the Google Play Store — it is free.
