How to Use GroupMe for Group Texting

GroupMe is a free app for group chats — great for family, church groups, neighborhood clubs, or any gathering where you want to keep everyone in the loop.

    1

Download GroupMe and Create an Account

    ~15s
Search for "GroupMe" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and install the free app. Open it and sign up with your phone number or Microsoft account. You'll receive a verification code by text to confirm your number.
    2

    Create a New Group

    ~22s
Tap the pencil icon or "New Group" button. Give the group a name (e.g., "Smith Family" or "Elm Street Neighbors"). Tap "Add people" — enter phone numbers or email addresses, or select from your contacts. Tap "Create" when done.

    Quick Tip

You can add a group photo or avatar by tapping the camera icon next to the group name. This makes it easier to identify the group at a glance.

    3

    Send and Receive Messages

    ~17s
Open a group and type in the message bar at the bottom. Tap the send arrow. To share a photo, tap the paperclip or photo icon next to the text bar. Everyone in the group sees the message instantly (or as a text if they don't have the app).
    4

    Add or Remove Members

    ~15s
Open the group. Tap the group name or avatar at the top. Scroll down to "Members." Tap "Add Members" to add someone new, or tap a member's name and choose "Remove from Group" if needed. You must be an admin to remove members.
    5

    Manage Notifications

    ~20s
If a group gets too chatty, you can mute it. Open the group → tap the name at the top → "Notifications" → choose "Do not disturb" for a set period or indefinitely. You'll still see messages when you open the app, but won't get constant alerts.

    Warning

Muting a group means you won't get alerts for time-sensitive messages. Reserve muting for lower-priority groups.

GroupMe is a free messaging app designed specifically for group conversations. Unlike a standard group text, GroupMe works the same way whether members have iPhones, Android phones, or even just regular phone numbers with no smartphone at all. Everyone receives messages the same way.

This makes GroupMe popular for community groups where members have a mix of phone types. A neighborhood watch, a church congregation, a book club, a family reunion planning committee — GroupMe handles these well without requiring everyone to use the same type of phone or app.

GroupMe was acquired by Microsoft and is available as a free app for iPhone, Android, and Windows. It's also accessible through a web browser if you prefer to use it on a computer.

A GroupMe group has one or more organizers (called administrators or "admins") who create the group, name it, and add members. Members can share text messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji. Admins can add or remove people at any time.

One helpful feature: you can "like" a message by tapping a heart on it. This lets people acknowledge something without sending a reply that clutters the conversation — useful when someone posts an event announcement and 20 people don't all need to reply "OK!"

GroupMe also works without the app: people can send and receive messages by regular SMS text if they don't want to download an app. They just get a text message from a GroupMe number and can reply to it. This makes it accessible for people who aren't comfortable with apps.
