    1

Download GroupMe and create an account

    ~15s
Search "GroupMe" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. Open it and sign up with your phone number or email address. Enter the verification code sent to your phone to confirm your account.
    2

    Create a new group

    ~25s
Tap the compose or pencil icon and choose New Group. Type a name for the group (like "Smith Family" or "Book Club 2026"). Optionally add a group photo. Then add members by typing their name (if they're in your contacts), phone number, or GroupMe username.

    Quick Tip

You can add people who don't have GroupMe yet — they'll receive a text message inviting them to join. They don't need a smartphone; they can even receive GroupMe messages as regular texts.

    3

    Send messages, photos, and GIFs

    ~20s
Type in the message bar and tap Send. To share a photo, tap the image icon and choose a photo from your camera roll or take a new one. Tap the GIF button to search for animated GIFs to add some humor to the conversation. "Like" any message by tapping the heart that appears when you hold down on it.
    4

    Mute a busy group

    ~15s
If a group is sending too many notifications, press and hold the group name in your chat list and select Mute or Mute Notifications. You'll still receive messages when you open the app, but your phone won't buzz for every single reply.
    5

    Use GroupMe on your computer

    ~16s
Go to groupme.com in any web browser and sign in with your phone number or email. All your groups and messages appear in the same layout as the app. Type from your keyboard for easier longer replies, especially useful for detailed messages or announcements to the group.

GroupMe is a free group messaging app owned by Microsoft. It's been around since 2010 and is one of the most widely used group chat tools in the US for family groups, sports teams, church groups, neighborhood associations, and friend circles. What makes GroupMe particularly practical is that it works across iPhone and Android without any of the compatibility issues that can come up when mixing Apple and non-Apple devices.

On iPhones, group chats that include Android users fall back to MMS — a dated format with compressed images, no read receipts, and occasional glitches. GroupMe sidesteps this entirely because it's its own app that runs the same way on every phone. Everyone in the group uses the same interface and features regardless of their device type.

Getting started is straightforward. Download the GroupMe app from the App Store or Google Play, or go to groupme.com. Create a free account using your phone number or email address. You'll be asked to verify your phone number with a text message code.

To create a group, tap the pencil or compose icon and choose New Group. Give the group a name, add a photo if you like (groups with a recognizable photo are easier to find in your list), and then add people by their phone number or GroupMe username. You can add people who don't have GroupMe yet — they'll receive a text invitation with a link to join.

Once in a group, you can send text messages, photos, videos, and GIFs. You can "like" any message with a heart (similar to reactions in other apps). Direct messages (called "Directs" in GroupMe) allow private one-on-one conversations outside the group.

If a group becomes too active and notifications pile up, long-press the group name and choose Mute. You'll still receive messages but won't get a notification sound for each one. When you're done with a group entirely, you can leave it the same way — long-press and select Leave Group.

GroupMe is also accessible from a computer at groupme.com, where you can type messages using a full keyboard — useful for longer replies.

Compared to WhatsApp, GroupMe is more common in everyday US social circles and doesn't require everyone to download WhatsApp. However, GroupMe does not offer end-to-end encryption, so it's not the right choice for sensitive private conversations. For general family and social communication, it works very well.
