Helping a family member set up a new device is a generous act — and it goes smoother when you approach it with a plan. Whether you are helping in person or over the phone, here is a framework that works.
Before you start, gather what you need: the new device, charger, WiFi password, their Apple ID or Google account credentials (write these down and store safely), and any accounts they use (email, banking, social media).
Set up the essentials first — WiFi connection, Apple ID or Google account, screen lock, and email. Do not overwhelm them with every feature at once. Focus on the 3-5 things they will use most: phone calls, texting, email, photos, and maybe one or two apps (video calling, banking).
As you set things up, explain what you are doing and why. Instead of doing everything silently, narrate: "I am connecting you to WiFi so the phone can access the internet." After setting something up, have them practice it while you are still there.
Increase the text size: iPhone: Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size. Android: Settings → Display → Font Size. This makes the screen much more comfortable to read.
Write down key information on paper (not in the phone): their Apple ID or Google account email and password, WiFi password, phone PIN, and instructions for the 3-5 things they will use most. Keep this paper in a safe place.
Before you leave, make sure they can: make a phone call, send and receive a text message, check their email, and take and view a photo. Schedule a follow-up check-in for a week later to answer questions that come up with daily use.
