How to Check the Balance on a Gift Card

Gift cards are a wonderful way to give and receive money for stores, restaurants, and online services. But after you use one a few times, it can be hard to remember how much money is left. The good news is that checking the balance on a gift card takes only a minute or two. And there are several ways to do it depending on what works best for you.

Most gift cards have a website printed right on the back of the card. The website usually says something like "Check your balance at..." followed by the web address. You will also find a 16-digit card number and a shorter PIN or security code, often hidden under a silver scratch-off panel. To check online, you type in the card number and the PIN, and the website shows you the remaining balance right away.

If you would rather use the phone, look on the back of the card for a toll-free number. You will hear a recorded voice that asks you to enter the card number using your phone keypad. After you enter the numbers, the recording tells you the balance. This works well if you do not feel comfortable typing on a computer or smartphone.

A third option is to take the card to the store that issued it. A cashier can swipe the card at the register and tell you the balance. Many stores will print a small receipt showing the amount left.

Always keep your gift cards in a safe place, like a wallet or a small folder near your computer. Write down the card number on a separate piece of paper in case the card is ever lost or stolen. Some stores can replace a card if you have proof of the number, but only if no one has spent the money yet. Checking the balance regularly helps you plan your shopping and avoid surprises at the checkout counter.
