Grocery prices can vary by a dollar or more for the same item across different stores. Over a month, that adds up. The good news is that most major grocery stores have free apps that show their current prices and weekly sales without you ever leaving home. By checking two or three apps before you shop, you can build your list around the best prices that week. Many seniors save $30 to $60 a month doing this.
The stores most worth checking are the ones near you with apps that show real prices: Walmart, Kroger (and its sister stores like Ralphs, Fred Meyer, and King Soopers), Aldi, Target, Costco, and Publix. Each app has a search bar where you can type an item like "orange juice" and see brands, sizes, and prices side by side. Apps also show this week's sale flyer, often called the "Weekly Ad". Sale items are usually 20% to 50% off and rotate weekly.
A good routine is this: every Sunday morning, sit with your phone and a cup of coffee. Open two store apps. Look at the weekly ads. Note which store has your big-ticket items — meat, produce, paper goods — for less. Build your list around those sales. If one store has chicken on sale and another has bananas on sale, you may decide one is worth a trip and the other you can skip until next week.
For an even faster approach, you can also use the Flipp app, which gathers weekly ads from many stores into one place so you do not have to open each one. Flipp is free and works on any phone. Whichever method you choose, the goal is to know prices before you shop, not after — that is where real savings come from.
