Every January and February, your bank sends out tax forms that show how much interest you earned, how much you paid in mortgage interest, or other money details the IRS needs to know about. These forms have names like 1099-INT (for interest), 1099-DIV (for dividends), and 1098 (for mortgage interest). Many banks no longer mail paper copies by default. Instead, they post the forms inside your online banking account, where you can view, download, and print them yourself.
Getting your forms online has real advantages. You can grab them the moment they are ready, often weeks before the paper version would arrive. You can save a copy on your computer, email it to your tax preparer, or print extra copies if you lose one. And you do not have to worry about a tax form sitting in your mailbox where someone could steal it. Tax forms contain your Social Security number and account information, so keeping them out of the mail is a real safety win.
The steps are very similar at most major banks, including Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, and credit unions. You sign in to your online banking, find a section called Statements and Documents or Tax Forms, pick the year you need, and download the file. The file will be a PDF, which most computers and phones can open right away.
Before you start, make sure you remember your online banking username and password. If you have not signed in for a while, the bank may ask you to verify your identity with a code sent to your phone or email. Have your phone nearby. If you do not have online banking set up at all, you can call your bank or visit a branch to enroll, then come back and follow the steps below.
