    Open the Notes app

    ~15s
Find the yellow Notes icon on your home screen and tap it. If you cannot see it, swipe down on the home screen and type "Notes" in the search bar at the top.
    2

    Create a new note

    ~15s
Tap the small square-and-pencil icon in the bottom-right corner. A blank note opens with the keyboard ready. Type "Grocery List" as the first line — this becomes the title.
    3

    Add your items

    ~15s
Press Return after the title, then type each grocery item on its own line. For example: milk, then Return, then bread, then Return, then eggs. Take your time. There is no rush.
    4

Turn the list into a checklist

    ~15s
Tap once anywhere in the list to place your cursor there. Tap the circle-with-checkmark icon above the keyboard (it looks like a checked-off circle). Every line now has a tappable circle next to it.
    5

    Check items off while shopping

    ~15s
At the store, open the same note and tap the circle next to each item as you place it in your cart. Checked items move to the bottom automatically so the rest of your list stays easy to read.
    6

    Share with family (optional)

    ~15s
Tap the three-dots icon at the top of the note, then tap "Share Note". Pick the person from your contacts. They can now add items from their own iPhone. And you will see the changes right away.

Paper grocery lists work fine until they end up in the wash or left on the kitchen counter. Your iPhone has a free app called Notes that can hold your grocery list, let you check items off as you shop, and even share the list with your spouse or an adult child. You do not need to buy any extra apps or sign up for anything new. If you can send a text message, you can do this.

The Notes app comes already installed on every iPhone. Look for the yellow icon that looks like a small notepad. Once you open it, you can create a fresh note for groceries, type each item on its own line, and turn the whole list into a checklist with one tap. As you walk the aisles, tap each circle to put a checkmark next to items you have grabbed. When you get home, tap a button to clear the checked items and your list is ready for next week.

Many seniors keep one running grocery list and add to it during the week as they notice things running low. That way, when shopping day arrives, the list is already done. You can also share the list with a family member so they can add items from their own phone. This is helpful when an adult child is doing your shopping or when you and your spouse are splitting the trip.

This guide walks you through every step in plain language, with no jargon. By the end, you will have a working grocery list on your phone that you can pull up at any store. If you make a mistake, nothing is broken. You can always tap and try again. Your list lives on your phone and syncs with iCloud, so even if your phone runs out of battery, the list is safe.
