How to Pay with Your Phone Using Apple Pay or Google Pay

Your phone can pay at stores, restaurants, and drive-throughs — no wallet needed. Learn how to set up Apple Pay or Google Pay and use it safely at checkout.

Set up Apple Pay on iPhone

Open the Wallet app on your iPhone. It looks like a wallet with cards in it and should already be on your home screen or in your app library. Tap the plus sign (+) in the top-right corner. Your iPhone camera will open and prompt you to position your credit or debit card in the frame. Hold your physical card in front of the camera. It will read the card number automatically. You will then need to enter the three-digit security code from the back of the card and confirm the card's expiration date. Your bank or card issuer will send a verification code by text message or ask you to call them. Once verified, your card appears in Wallet and is ready to use. You can add multiple cards and set one as your "default" card that gets used first.

Quick Tip

You can add most Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover credit and debit cards. Prepaid cards may or may not be supported depending on the issuer. HSA (health savings account) cards often work too.

Warning

Only add cards that belong to you. Do not add someone else's card without their permission.

Set up Google Pay on Android

Open the Google Wallet app on your Android phone. If you do not see it, search for "Google Wallet" in the Google Play Store and install it for free. Tap "Add to Wallet" and then tap "Payment card." You can either take a photo of your card with the camera or enter the details by hand. Enter the card number, expiration date, and security code. Google will send a verification step — usually a text message to the phone number on file with your bank, or a message in your banking app. Once verified, your card is added. On many Samsung phones, Samsung also offers Samsung Pay, which works the same way and can be set up through the Samsung Wallet app.

Quick Tip

If you already use Chrome or Google on your phone and have previously saved a card to your Google account, it may already be in Google Wallet without any setup needed.

Pay at a store checkout using Apple Pay

When you are ready to pay, tell the cashier you are paying with your phone, or look for the contactless symbol on the payment terminal. On your iPhone, double-click the side button (the button on the right edge of the phone). Your Wallet opens and shows your default card. Hold your phone face-up about one inch from the payment terminal's screen. Look at your phone to let Face ID recognize your face — or rest your finger on the home button if your iPhone uses Touch ID. You will hear a chime and feel a light vibration, and the screen will show a checkmark. That means the payment went through. The whole process takes about three seconds.

Quick Tip

If Face ID does not work (sometimes happens in bright sunlight or at an odd angle), you can also enter your iPhone passcode to approve the payment.

Pay at a store checkout using Google Pay

To pay with Google Pay on Android, wake your phone screen and make sure it is unlocked. Hold the back of your phone (not the screen) about one inch from the payment terminal. You do not need to open the Google Wallet app first — most Android phones activate Google Pay automatically when you hold the phone near a terminal while unlocked. You will see a confirmation on your screen and feel a vibration when the payment is accepted. On some phones, you may need to open Google Wallet first and tap "Pay" before holding the phone to the terminal. Your phone and the terminal will sort out the rest.

Quick Tip

If you have multiple cards in Google Wallet, the most recently used card is charged by default. To switch cards, open Google Wallet before holding your phone to the terminal and tap the card you want to use.

Use tap-to-pay at a restaurant or drive-through

At a sit-down restaurant, the server may bring a portable payment terminal to your table. The same steps apply — double-click the side button on iPhone or hold your unlocked Android near the terminal. The server does not need to touch your phone. At a drive-through, the payment window will have a terminal on an arm or ledge. Hold your phone out the window close to the terminal screen. You may need to lean slightly, but most drive-through terminals are positioned to accommodate this. If the cashier seems unfamiliar with it, you can say "I'd like to use tap to pay" and they can direct you.

Quick Tip

You can still leave a tip when paying with your phone. The terminal will ask you to select a tip amount on its own touchscreen before or after the phone payment step.

Warning

If a terminal does not accept contactless payment, you will see a message or the terminal will not respond. In that case, pay with your physical card as a backup. Not every store has upgraded its equipment yet.

Check your payment history and remove a card

To see recent Apple Pay transactions: open the Wallet app, tap the card you used, and scroll down to see a list of recent purchases. To remove a card from Apple Pay: tap the card, tap the three dots (...) or the "i" icon, scroll down, and tap "Remove Card." To see Google Pay history: open the Google Wallet app and tap "Activity" at the bottom. To remove a card from Google Pay: tap the card, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and tap "Remove payment method." Removing a card from your phone does not cancel the actual card. It only removes it from tap-to-pay. Your physical card still works normally.

Quick Tip

If your phone is lost or stolen, you can right away remove all cards from Apple Pay by going to iCloud.com → Find My → your device → Remove. For Google Pay, go to pay.google.com on any computer and remove cards from there. Your money is safe even before you do this, because nobody can use the phone to pay without your face, fingerprint, or PIN.

Paying with your phone means holding your phone near the payment terminal at a store checkout — the same little card reader you normally tap or swipe a credit card on. Your phone communicates with that terminal wirelessly and completes the payment in about one second. You do not need to take out your wallet, swipe a card, or sign anything.

This technology is called "contactless payment" or "tap to pay." Apple's version is called Apple Pay (for iPhones). Google's version is called Google Pay or Google Wallet (for Android phones). Both work the same way at the checkout counter.

Which phones support tap-to-pay?

**iPhone:** Apple Pay works on iPhone 6 and all newer models. If your iPhone was made in the last 10 years, it almost certainly supports Apple Pay.
**Android:** Google Pay works on most Android phones made in the last 5–6 years. Your phone needs a feature called NFC (Near Field Communication) — a short-range wireless chip. Most modern Android phones from Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and others have it.

Is it safe?

Paying with your phone is actually more secure than swiping a physical credit card. Here is why: when you add a card to Apple Pay or Google Pay, your actual card number is never stored on your phone and never sent to the store. Instead, the system creates a unique one-time code for each purchase. Even if someone were listening to the wireless signal, they would get a useless one-time code that cannot be reused. Your real card number stays private.

Also, every payment requires you to unlock your phone using your face (Face ID), your fingerprint (Touch ID), or your PIN. A thief who steals your phone cannot make a payment without that unlock step.

Where can you use it?

Look for one of these symbols at the checkout counter: - A wireless signal symbol (looks like a sideways WiFi symbol) - The Apple Pay logo - The Google Pay logo - A contactless card symbol (four curved lines)

Most major grocery stores, pharmacies, fast-food restaurants, gas stations, and large retailers now accept contactless payments. Drive-throughs with a pay window work too — hold your phone out the car window near the payment terminal. Some smaller independent stores may not have the equipment yet.

Do you need to have the exact app installed?

Apple Pay is built into every iPhone. You do not need to download anything. You access it through the Wallet app, which comes pre-installed. Google Pay/Google Wallet is also pre-installed on most Android phones, but if you do not see it, you can download it free from the Google Play Store.
