How to Scan Receipts on Your iPhone Files App
The Files app on every iPhone has a built-in scanner that turns paper receipts into clean PDFs in about ten seconds. Here is the plain way to use it.
At a Glance
Open the Files App and Pick a Location
~36sQuick Tip
iCloud Drive is the better choice for tax receipts because if you lose the phone, the receipts are still safe in iCloud.
Create a Folder for the Year
~33sWarning
If you skip the folder setup, scanned receipts go into the main Files area and become hard to find later. Spend the two minutes to set up the folders before scanning.
Start a New Scan
~37sQuick Tip
A dark wood table or a black tray works well as a background. Avoid scanning on a white tablecloth, because the scanner has trouble finding the edges of a white receipt on white.
Scan More Pages or Save
~32sQuick Tip
Group similar receipts in one PDF, like all prescription receipts for May, to keep the folder count low.
Rename the File With a Clear Name
~34sWarning
Do not use slashes in the file name. iPhone treats slashes as folder separators, and the file will not save correctly.

Every iPhone made in the last several years has a hidden document scanner built into the Files app. You do not need to download anything, you do not need to pay for an app. And you do not need a separate scanner sitting on a desk. Hold the phone over a receipt, and in about ten seconds you have a clean, searchable PDF saved in a folder of your choice. For tax receipts, this is faster than fighting with a scanner cable, and the result is sharper than a phone photo because the app straightens the paper and crops out the background automatically.
The scanner lives inside the Files app, which has a blue folder icon. It is one of the apps that comes with the iPhone, and you cannot delete it. Many people have never opened it because the name is plain. But it is one of the most useful tools on the phone. The same scanner also lives inside the Notes app and inside Mail when you are writing a message. The steps below use the Files app because it saves directly to a folder you control, which is what you want for tax receipts that need to stay organized for years.
Before the first scan, take two minutes to set up a folder system. Open Files, tap On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, then tap the three dots in the top-right corner and choose New Folder. Name it "Tax Receipts 2026" or whatever year applies. Inside that folder, create twelve more folders for January through December. From now on, every scanned receipt has a clear home. iCloud Drive is the better choice if you have a Mac or iPad, because the receipts sync everywhere automatically. On My iPhone is fine if you only use the iPhone.
The scanning itself is straightforward. Place the receipt on a contrasting background, like a dark table or a piece of black paper if the receipt is white. Hold the phone twelve to eighteen inches above the receipt. The scanner finds the edges and snaps automatically when it has a good shot. Repeat for additional receipts to make a multi-page PDF, or tap Save after one. Rename the file with the date and a short description, like "2026-05-08 prescription Walgreens." That filename makes it easy to search the folder later by month or by item. The whole process from first tap to saved PDF takes about thirty seconds once you have done it a few times.
