Pick the right app for your phone

    ~29s
On iPhone, you have two good choices. Migraine Buddy is the most detailed (free, with optional paid features). The built-in Health app also tracks headaches under "Symptoms" with no extra download. On Android, Migraine Buddy is the top free pick. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android), search for "Migraine Buddy," and look for the app made by Healint.

    Quick Tip

If you want the smallest app with no signup, the iPhone Health app is the fastest start. Tap the heart icon on your home screen.

    2

Install Migraine Buddy and create an account

    ~30s
Tap the green "Get" or "Install" button. After it downloads, tap "Open." The app asks for your name, age, and email. You can sign in with Apple or Google to save typing. The app then asks a few questions about your migraine history (how long you have had them, how often, what medicine you take). Answer what you know. You can update later.

    Warning

Avoid sharing your email with any free app you do not trust. Migraine Buddy is from a known company, but always read what permissions it asks for.

    3

    Log your first migraine

    ~28s
When a migraine starts, open the app and tap the big red "+ Record Attack" button. The app asks: when did it start, where is the pain (it shows a head diagram, tap the spot), how bad is it (slide the bar from 0 to 10), and what symptoms came with it (nausea, light sensitivity, aura). Tap each one that fits. Tap Save.

    Quick Tip

If the migraine is too painful to log right then, wait until you feel better. The app lets you go back and add past attacks.

    4

    Add possible triggers and treatments

    ~24s
After the attack, the app asks what you ate, how you slept, your stress level, and the weather. Tap each one that may have played a role. Then tap what helped: a medicine, a dark room, ice, sleep. Be honest. Over weeks, the app spots patterns, like "your migraines often follow nights with under 6 hours of sleep."

    Warning

Do not skip the trigger questions. Without that data, the app cannot find your patterns.

    5

Use the iPhone Health app as a backup

    ~24s
Open the Health app (white icon with a red heart). Tap "Browse" at the bottom, then "Symptoms," then "Headache." Tap "Add Data." Pick the date, time, and severity (mild, moderate, severe). Tap Add. This data lives in your iPhone forever and can be shared with your doctor through the Health Sharing feature.

    Quick Tip

The Health app also tracks sleep and weather. Pair it with Migraine Buddy for the fullest picture.

    6

Share your log with your doctor

    ~21s
In Migraine Buddy, tap the menu (three lines), then "Reports." Pick a date range (last 30 days is a good start). Tap "Generate PDF." The app makes a clear report with charts and tables. Email it to your doctor or print it before your visit. In the iPhone Health app, tap your profile photo, then "Sharing," then "Share with your Doctor."

Migraines are more than bad headaches. They can knock you out for hours or days, with throbbing pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, and a fog that makes thinking hard. If you get migraines often, the best gift you can give your doctor (and yourself) is a clear log of when they hit, how bad they were, and what may have set them off. A pen and paper work fine, but your phone can do this faster and remember every detail for years. There are free migraine tracking apps for both iPhone and Android that take less than a minute per entry. They ask you to tap a few buttons (when the migraine started, where the pain is, how strong it feels on a 0-10 scale, what you ate, how much you slept, and what helped). Over time, the app shows patterns. You may discover that your migraines flare up after red wine, after poor sleep, or during weather changes. Knowing your triggers means you can avoid them or prepare ahead. This guide walks you through the two most trusted free apps: Migraine Buddy (available on iPhone and Android, used by over 4 million people) and the Apple Health app (built into every iPhone, no download needed). We show you how to download, set up, and log your first migraine. We also cover how to share your log with your doctor as a PDF or printout. You do not need to be tech-savvy. The apps use big buttons and plain language. By the end of this guide, you will be able to track every migraine with confidence and bring real data to your next neurology appointment.
