How to Use Your Doctor's Patient Portal (MyChart & Others)

Access your medical records, message your doctor, view test results, and schedule appointments — all online.

    1

    What is a patient portal?

    ~18s
A patient portal is a secure website (or app) provided by your doctor's office or hospital. The most common one is MyChart, used by thousands of healthcare providers. It lets you view test results, message your doctor, request prescription refills, schedule appointments, and see your medical history — all without calling the office.
    2

    Create your account

    ~21s
Ask your doctor's office for a patient portal activation code. Go to the portal website (usually linked from your doctor's website) or download the MyChart app. Enter your activation code, create a username and password, and set up security questions. Some portals let you verify your identity with your date of birth and last 4 digits of your SSN instead of an activation code.
    3

    View your test results

    ~27s
After a blood test or other lab work, results typically appear in your portal within 1-3 days. Go to "Test Results" or "Labs." Each result shows the test name, your result, and the normal range. Results outside the normal range are usually flagged. If you're unsure what a result means, use the portal's messaging feature to ask your doctor.

    Quick Tip

Don't panic if you see a flagged result — many slightly out-of-range values are normal. Your doctor will reach out if anything needs attention.

    4

    Message your doctor

    ~24s
Go to "Messages" and tap "New Message." Select your doctor from the dropdown. Type your question — it's like sending an email. Common uses: asking about symptoms, requesting prescription refills, following up after a visit, or asking about test results. Most doctors respond within 1-2 business days. For urgent issues, always call or go to urgent care.

    Warning

Never use the patient portal for emergencies. If you're having chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a medical emergency, call 911.

    5

    Schedule appointments and manage medications

    ~16s
Tap "Appointments" to see upcoming visits or schedule new ones. Many portals let you choose available time slots directly. Under "Medications," you'll see all your current prescriptions. Tap "Request Refill" to ask your doctor to send a refill to your pharmacy — much easier than calling.
