How to Use the Health App on iPhone to Track Your Wellbeing

iPhone's built-in Health app collects data from your phone and Apple Watch in one place — here's what it tracks and how to share it with your doctor.

    1

Open the Health app and explore what it tracks

    ~25s
The Health app has a white icon with a red heart. Tap it to open. The "Summary" tab shows your recent health data — steps today, walking minutes, heart rate (if you have an Apple Watch), and sleep. Even without an Apple Watch, your iPhone automatically tracks steps and walking using its built-in sensors. Tap "Browse" at the bottom to see all the categories of health data the app can store.
    2

    Set up your Medical ID

    ~30s
Your Medical ID stores critical health information that emergency responders can read from your locked iPhone. Tap your profile picture in the top right → "Medical ID" → "Edit." Fill in: blood type, any medical conditions, allergies, medications, and emergency contacts. Tap "Done" to save. To make it accessible from the lock screen (important!), make sure "Show When Locked" is turned on.

    Quick Tip

To view your Medical ID from a locked iPhone: press the Side button to wake the phone, tap "Emergency," then tap "Medical ID." First responders know to look here.

    3

Track your medications in the Health app

    ~23s
The Health app has a Medications feature to help you remember your prescriptions. Tap "Browse" → "Medications" → "Add a Medication." Type the medication name, set the dosage, and choose a schedule (daily at a certain time, as needed, etc.). The Health app will send you a reminder notification when it's time to take each medication. Tap to log whether you took it or skipped it.

Share health data with your doctor

    ~26s
If your doctor uses a compatible system (like Epic's Health app integration or Apple Health Records), you can share your health data directly with them digitally. Tap your profile picture → "Health Records" → look for your health system or hospital. If connected, lab results, medications, and visit history will sync automatically into your Health app. You can also export your health data: profile picture → "Export All Health Data" to create a file to email to your doctor.
