Set Up Your Login.gov or ID.me Account

    ~53s
Open your web browser and type myhealth.va.gov in the address bar at the top of the window. Press Enter. The home page shows a blue "Sign In" button near the top. Click it. You will see options to sign in with Login.gov, ID.me, DS Logon, or My HealtheVet. New users should pick Login.gov because it is the simplest. Click "Sign in with Login.gov" and follow the prompts to create an account. You will enter your email address, create a password of at least twelve characters, and set up a backup method like a phone number for security codes. Login.gov will ask you to verify your identity with a photo of your government ID and a selfie taken with your phone. The full setup takes about thirty minutes. Write your password down and keep it with your other passwords in a safe place at home.

    Warning

Use a brand new password for My HealtheVet, not one you already use elsewhere. Federal health portals are popular targets for password-reuse attacks.

Verify Your Identity and Link Your VA Records

    ~53s
After you finish Login.gov setup, you will be returned to My HealtheVet. The site will ask you to verify that you are an enrolled VA patient. Click "Upgrade my account" or "Verify my identity" and follow the prompts. You may be asked to confirm your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and the address on file with the VA. If your information matches, you will be approved for what the VA calls a Premium account. If your information does not match, the system will direct you to bring your photo ID to a VA Medical Center to verify in person. Premium access is required to refill prescriptions and message your care team. Once you have Premium access, you will not need to verify again unless you change your name or address.

    Quick Tip

If the system cannot verify you online, walk into the nearest VA Medical Center release of information office during business hours with your driver license. The verification takes about ten minutes in person.

Refill a Prescription in Three Clicks

    ~54s
Once signed in, look on the home page for a tile or menu labeled "Pharmacy" or "Refill VA Prescriptions." Click it. A list of your current VA prescriptions will appear, with each medication name, dose, prescriber, and remaining refills. Find the medication you want to refill and click the small box on the left of its row, putting a check mark in the box. You can check multiple medications at once if more than one is ready. Look at the bottom of the page for a button labeled "Refill" or "Submit Refill Request." Click it. A confirmation page will show your selections and the address where the medication will be mailed. Click "Confirm" or "Submit." The page will say "Your refill has been requested" with a tracking number. The medication will arrive in your mailbox in three to seven business days.

    Quick Tip

Refill any medication when you have about three weeks of pills left. The VA mail pharmacy is reliable, but a storm or holiday weekend can add a few extra days.

    4

Send a Secure Message to Your Care Team

    ~51s
From the home page, look for a menu item labeled "Messages" or "Secure Messaging." Click it. You will see your inbox, which contains any messages your care team has sent you, along with any sent messages you have written. To start a new message, click "New Message" or the small pencil icon. Choose your care team from the drop-down list. If you see more than one team, pick the one for your primary care doctor unless your question is about a specialist. Type a clear subject like "Question about my blood pressure medicine." In the body, write your question in plain English. Keep it short and specific: which medication, what symptom, when it started, and what you would like the team to do. Click Send. You will get a written reply within three business days for non-urgent questions.

    Warning

Never use secure messaging for medical emergencies. For chest pain, sudden weakness, trouble breathing, or any other emergency, call 911 right away.

    5

View Lab Results and Appointment History

    ~52s
From the home page, look for menu items labeled "Lab and Test Results" and "Appointments." Click "Lab and Test Results" to see recent blood work, urinalysis, imaging summaries, and other test reports. Each result shows the test name, the date, the value, and the normal range. If a value is outside the normal range it will be flagged. Lab results usually appear in My HealtheVet within seven days of the test. If you do not understand a result, send a secure message to your care team asking for an explanation in plain English. Click "Appointments" to see past and upcoming visits. From this screen, you can also request a new appointment, cancel a future one, or check the location and time of an appointment you already have. Print or screen-shot anything you want to share with a non-VA doctor.

    Quick Tip

Before each VA appointment, log in and check the appointment time and location yourself. Last-minute changes are sometimes made and a printed confirmation prevents wasted trips.

Set Up Mail and Email Reminders

    ~53s
From the menu, find "Account Settings" or "Personal Information." Click it. You will see options to set notification preferences. Check the boxes for the alerts you want, such as new secure messages, appointment reminders, and prescription shipment notices. Choose the email address where you want notifications sent. This can be the same address you use to log in, or a different one. If you have a smartphone, you can also enable text-message notifications. The VA does not charge for text messages, but standard carrier rates may apply. Save your changes by clicking the button at the bottom of the page. From now on, you will get a quick email or text when a prescription has shipped, when a secure message has arrived, or when an appointment is approaching. This means you can stop checking the website every day.

    Quick Tip

If you do not want a flood of emails, turn on only prescription shipment notices and secure messaging alerts. Appointment reminders by mail or phone may be enough on their own.

My HealtheVet is the free online patient portal run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is the main way enrolled veterans manage their VA health care from a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Through My HealtheVet you can refill prescriptions, send secure messages to your VA care team, view recent lab results, schedule and cancel appointments, view your medical history, and download a copy of your records to share with non-VA doctors. As of May 2026, more than 9 million veterans have an active My HealtheVet account, and over 70 percent of VA prescription refills are now ordered through the portal.

For senior veterans, the prescription refill feature is the biggest time-saver. Instead of calling the VA pharmacy, waiting on hold, and reading off prescription numbers, you log in, click two buttons, and have a confirmation in under a minute. The medication is mailed to your home in three to seven business days, usually in a sturdy white envelope from the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy. There is no shipping charge for VA mail-order medications. If you have a 90-day supply prescription, you can refill it as soon as you have about three weeks of pills left, so you never run out.

The portal also gives you secure messaging with your VA care team. This is not regular email. It is a closed system inside the My HealtheVet website that meets federal health privacy rules. Use it for non-urgent questions like dose clarifications, refill timing, side-effect questions, or appointment requests. Your VA primary care team usually responds within three business days. Do not use secure messaging for emergencies. For any medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For urgent same-day concerns, call your VA clinic directly or use the 24-hour nurse advice line on your VA insurance card.

Before you begin, you need an active VA health care enrollment and either a Login.gov account or an ID.me account, both of which are free identity-verification services used across federal websites. Setting up an account the first time takes about thirty minutes and may require you to upload a photo of your driver license or state ID. Once your account is set up, daily use takes under a minute. Have your VA identification number handy if you have one, along with the email address you used when you enrolled in VA health care. If you have never enrolled in VA health care, you must do that first at va.gov before signing up for My HealtheVet.
