How to Use WhatsApp: Setup, Messaging & Video Calls

Get started with WhatsApp — the world's most popular messaging app for free texts, calls, and video chats.

    1

    Install WhatsApp

    ~16s
Search "WhatsApp Messenger" in your phone's app store and tap Install. Open the app and agree to the terms. Enter your phone number — WhatsApp will send a verification code via text message. Type in the code to verify your number. Add your name and an optional profile photo.
    2

    Send your first message

    ~20s
Tap the green compose button (pencil icon or chat bubble). Select a contact from your phone's address book — anyone who also has WhatsApp will appear. Type your message in the text box at the bottom and tap the green send arrow. The single grey checkmark means it's sent; double grey means it's delivered; double blue means it's been read.
    3

Make a voice or video call

    ~22s
Open any chat conversation. For a voice call, tap the phone icon at the top right. For a video call, tap the video camera icon. WhatsApp calls use your internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), so they're free — no phone minutes used. Call quality is best on Wi-Fi.

    Quick Tip

WhatsApp calls work internationally at no extra cost — perfect for staying in touch with family abroad.

    4

    Share photos and documents

    ~18s
In a chat, tap the paperclip icon (Android) or + icon (iPhone) next to the message box. Choose "Gallery" to send a photo from your library, "Camera" to take a new one, or "Document" to send a PDF or file. You can also send your location by choosing "Location" — useful when meeting someone.
    5

    Create a group chat

    ~24s
Tap the compose button → "New Group." Select the people you want to add (up to 1,024 members). Tap the green arrow, then name the group (e.g., "Family Chat" or "Book Club"). Tap the green checkmark to create it. Everyone in the group sees all messages.

    Quick Tip

You can mute a noisy group: open the group → tap the name at the top → Mute Notifications → choose 8 hours, 1 week, or Always.
