How to Use iCloud Keychain to Manage Your Passwords on iPhone

iCloud Keychain is Apple's built-in password manager — it remembers your passwords, fills them in automatically, generates strong new ones, and alerts you to reused passwords.

    1

    Turn on iCloud Keychain

    ~15s
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Passwords and Keychain. Make sure "Sync this iPhone" is on (green). Now passwords you save in Safari will sync to iCloud and be available on your iPad and Mac.
    2

View and manage your saved passwords

    ~28s
Go to Settings > Passwords. Authenticate with Face ID or your passcode. You'll see a list of every username and password saved to your keychain, organized by website or app. Tap any entry to see the full password. You can edit incorrect entries or delete ones you no longer need.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Look for the yellow warning icon next to passwords — it indicates that password was found in a data breach or is reused on multiple sites. These should be changed to new, unique passwords.

    3

    Use AutoFill for automatic login

    ~15s
When you visit a website in Safari and tap the username field, Keychain shows a suggestion above the keyboard. Tap it to automatically fill your username and password. Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to confirm. The login happens instantly — no typing.
    4

Let Keychain generate a strong password

    ~27s
When creating a new account on a website, tap in the password field. Safari suggests a strong, unique password (a long random combination of letters, numbers, and symbols). Tap "Use Strong Password" to accept it. Keychain saves it automatically — you don't need to memorize it.

    Warning

Letting Keychain generate strong passwords only works well if you stay in the Apple ecosystem. If you switch to Android, you'll need to export or transfer your passwords. Consider this before building your entire password library in Keychain.

    5

    Access passwords on your Mac

    ~18s
On your Mac, open Safari and go to Safari > Settings > Passwords. Sign in with your Mac password. All the same passwords from your iPhone appear here and auto-fill in Mac Safari. You can also install the iCloud Passwords extension for Chrome on Mac to use Keychain passwords in Chrome.

iCloud Keychain is Apple's free, built-in password manager that works across all your Apple devices. If you've ever tapped "Save Password" when logging into a website on your iPhone, your passwords are already being stored in iCloud Keychain.

Keychain fills in your username and password automatically when you return to a website or app, so you don't have to remember or retype them. It also generates strong, unique passwords for new accounts, and warns you if you're using the same password on multiple sites (which makes accounts more vulnerable).

All passwords are encrypted and unlocked only with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode — Apple cannot see them.
