Apple TV Tips and Features for Everyday Viewing

Apple TV does more than stream Netflix. These tips — HomeKit controls, Siri search, AirPlay, sleep timer, and audio settings — make it much more useful.

    1

Use Siri to find what to watch across all apps

    ~30s
Press and hold the microphone button on the Siri Remote and say what you're looking for: "Show me Tom Hanks movies," "Find nature documentaries," "Play something funny," or "What's on tonight?" Siri searches across Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and other installed apps simultaneously and shows results from all of them.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Asking Siri "What did he just say?" rewinds the scene you just watched by 15 seconds and turns on captions for that brief segment — great for moments when dialogue is hard to hear.

    2

Enable Reduce Loud Sounds for consistent audio

    ~19s
Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Reduce Loud Sounds. Turn this on. Apple TV will automatically reduce sudden loud sounds (like action movie explosions or loud commercials) while keeping dialogue audible. This is one of the most useful settings for people who frequently have to reach for the remote during loud scenes.
    3

Use your iPhone as a remote

    ~18s
Open Control Center on your iPhone (swipe down from top right). Tap the Apple TV remote icon. Your iPhone becomes a full remote with a touchpad interface — often easier to use for typing searches or navigating than the physical remote. If you lose the Siri Remote, this is an excellent backup.
    4

    Control HomeKit smart home devices

    ~18s
If you use Apple HomeKit compatible smart home devices (lights, locks, cameras, thermostat), Apple TV acts as a home hub that controls them remotely. Go to Settings > AirPlay and HomeKit to confirm it's set as a home hub. You can then control HomeKit devices from your iPhone even when away from home.
    5

    Set a sleep timer

    ~21s
Go to Settings > General > Sleep After. You can set Apple TV to go to sleep automatically after 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, etc. of inactivity — the TV will black out if you fall asleep watching. This also saves energy. You can also press and hold the TV button on the remote to access a sleep option from any screen.
