How to Set Up Medical ID on Your iPhone

Medical ID lets paramedics see your medical conditions, allergies, and emergency contacts from your locked iPhone screen.

    1

    Open the Health app

    ~15s
Find and open the Health app on your iPhone. It is a white icon with a red heart. If you can't find it, swipe down from the middle of your home screen and type "Health" in the search bar.
    2

Tap your profile picture and then Medical ID

    ~15s
In the Health app, tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner. Then tap "Medical ID." If you have not set one up yet, tap "Create Medical ID."

    3

    Fill in your medical information

    ~23s
Add information that emergency responders need to know: medical conditions (such as diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy), medications you take and their dosages, allergies and reactions, and your blood type if you know it. Add as much or as little as you are comfortable sharing.

    Quick Tip

You do not have to fill in every field. Even just adding your name, blood type, and one emergency contact is extremely helpful for first responders.

    4

    Add emergency contacts

    ~20s
Scroll down to "Emergency Contacts" and tap the + button to add a contact from your phone. Add a spouse, adult child, or close family member. Include their relationship to you. Emergency responders can call this person directly from your locked phone.

    Warning

Make sure your emergency contacts know they are listed and that their phone number in your contacts is current.

    5

    Turn on "Show When Locked"

    ~17s
At the top of the Medical ID screen, make sure "Show When Locked" is turned on. This is critical — it means emergency responders can see your medical information even when your iPhone is locked with a passcode. Without this turned on, your Medical ID is useless in an emergency.
    6

    Save and verify it works

    ~17s
Tap "Done" to save. To verify it works from your lock screen: press the Side button to wake your phone, tap "Emergency" in the bottom-left corner, then tap "Medical ID." You should see all the information you just entered. This is exactly what a paramedic or ER nurse would see.
