Download the Lemonade app and start your quote

    ~25s
Search for "Lemonade" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and install the free app. You can also get a quote at lemonade.com in your web browser. Open the app and tap "Get a Quote." Select whether you need renters insurance (if you rent your home) or homeowners insurance (if you own your home). Answer the questions about your address, how many people live there, and basic details about the home.

Choose your coverage amount and deductible

    ~37s
Lemonade will ask how much personal property coverage you want — this is the total value of your belongings that would be covered. Think about the replacement cost of your furniture, electronics, clothing, and other possessions to estimate a reasonable number. You will also choose a deductible, which is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. A higher deductible means a lower monthly premium, but you pay more if something happens.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Most renters underestimate the value of their belongings. Add up the replacement cost (not the used value) of your TV, laptop, furniture, clothing, and kitchen items — most people find they have $15,000 to $30,000 or more in possessions.

    3

    Select your Giveback charity

    ~21s
During sign-up, Lemonade asks you to choose a nonprofit organization for the Giveback program. Browse the list of causes and select one that matters to you — options typically include animal welfare, environmental causes, education, and more. At the end of each policy year, if there is money left after paying claims, Lemonade donates a portion to your chosen cause on your behalf.
    4

Review your policy and start coverage

    ~35s
Review the policy summary before completing your purchase. It should clearly show what is covered, what is excluded (things the policy does not pay for), your coverage limits, and your monthly premium. Common exclusions include flooding, earthquakes, and normal wear and tear — these require separate policies. If everything looks correct, enter your payment information to activate coverage. Your policy documents will be emailed to you and stored in the app.

    Warning

Standard renters and homeowners policies from Lemonade and most insurers do not cover flood damage. If you live in an area prone to flooding, ask about separate flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) at floodsmart.gov.

    5

File a claim through the app if needed

    ~24s
If you ever need to make a claim, open the Lemonade app and tap "File a Claim." You will be guided through a short video or text description of what happened. Upload any photos of the damage or theft report from police. Lemonade's AI system reviews straightforward claims quickly — some are approved and paid in minutes. More complex claims are reviewed by a human claims specialist, which may take longer.

Lemonade is an insurance company that handles everything through an app and website — no phone calls with agents, no paperwork, and no waiting days for a quote. The company was designed from the ground up around technology, which lets it offer lower prices and a faster experience than many traditional insurers.

Lemonade offers renters insurance and homeowners insurance. Renters insurance protects the things you own (furniture, electronics, clothing, etc.) in case of theft, fire, or other damage — it does not cover the building itself, which your landlord's policy handles. Homeowners insurance protects both your belongings and the physical structure of your home from covered events like fires, certain weather damage, theft, and liability if someone is injured on your property.

Getting a quote from Lemonade takes about two minutes. You answer a series of questions about yourself, your home, and what coverage amount you want, and Lemonade shows you a monthly price. You can adjust your coverage levels and deductible amounts to change the price.

Lemonade has a unique program called Giveback. At the end of each year, Lemonade takes any portion of premiums that were not paid out as claims and donates them to a nonprofit of your choosing — a cause you select when you sign up. Lemonade keeps a fixed percentage of premiums as its fee, which means the company does not profit more by denying claims, unlike traditional insurers.

Filing a claim on Lemonade is done through the app with an AI named Maya. You describe what happened, submit photos if applicable, and many straightforward claims are paid in minutes, not days. More complex claims may require additional review.
