Download and set up the Lyft app

    ~25s
Search "Lyft" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. Tap "Get Started" and enter your phone number. Lyft sends a verification code via text. Enter it. Add your name, add a payment method (credit or debit card), and you are ready.

    Quick Tip

If you need help setting up the app, ask a family member or contact your local senior center — many offer tech help for exactly this purpose.

    2

Request a ride to your appointment

    ~18s
Tap the search bar and type your destination (the name or address of the medical facility). Lyft will suggest addresses — tap the correct one. Choose your pickup location (defaults to your current location, or type a different address). Select the ride type — "Lyft" (regular) is usually the most affordable. Tap "Confirm."
    3

    Track your driver

    ~26s
After requesting, a driver is assigned. You will see their name, photo, car make/color, license plate, and a map showing where they are. The app shows the estimated arrival time. When the driver arrives, you will get a notification. Do not get into a car until you verify the license plate matches the app.

    Warning

Always confirm the driver's name and car plate match what the app shows before getting in. Never get into a car that approaches you offering a ride without matching.

    4

Check if your insurance covers rides

    ~26s
Call the member services number on your Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, or insurance card. Ask: "Does my plan cover non-emergency medical transportation to doctor appointments?" If yes, ask for the process. Some plans have their own ride coordination phone number. Others let you request Lyft rides at no cost through the plan's app or member portal.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Many Medicaid plans cover rides to medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy appointments. Call and ask specifically — the savings can be significant.

    5

Schedule a ride for future appointments

    ~21s
In the Lyft app, you can schedule rides up to 7 days in advance. Tap "Schedule" on the main screen, enter your destination, and choose the pickup date and time. Lyft will remind you and confirm a driver the morning of your appointment. This is much better than trying to get a ride last-minute when you are already nervous about an appointment.

Getting to medical appointments can be a major challenge for people who cannot drive — especially seniors, people recovering from surgery, or those with disabilities. Lyft has programs specifically designed to help.

There are several ways to get help with medical transportation:

    Lyft Regular Rides

: Anyone can use the standard Lyft app to request a ride to a doctor's office or hospital. You pay the normal fare. This is the simplest option.

    Medicare Advantage Plans

: Many Medicare Advantage plans include free or low-cost non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) as a benefit. This can include Lyft rides to covered medical appointments. Check your plan's summary of benefits or call the number on your Medicare Advantage card.

    Medicaid

: Most state Medicaid programs include free non-emergency medical transportation. Call your state's Medicaid office or your Medicaid managed care plan to arrange covered rides.

    Lyft Concierge (through healthcare)

: Many hospitals, clinics, and healthcare systems use Lyft Concierge to arrange rides for patients directly. If your healthcare provider offers this, they can schedule a Lyft on your behalf — you may not even need the app.

    Local Programs

: Many counties, Area Agencies on Aging, and senior centers offer free or subsidized ride programs. Call your local senior center or 211 to ask about options in your area.

This guide focuses on using the standard Lyft app to request a medical ride yourself.
