How to Set Up Netgear Orbi Mesh Wi-Fi

Netgear Orbi is a mesh Wi-Fi system designed to provide strong, consistent wireless coverage throughout your home. Unlike a traditional router that broadcasts from one location (which means signal weakens with distance and walls), an Orbi system places multiple units around your home that work together as a single network.

What makes Orbi somewhat unique compared to other mesh systems is its dedicated backhaul channel. Most mesh systems use the same Wi-Fi band to communicate between units and to serve your devices. Orbi reserves a dedicated radio exclusively for communication between the main router and its satellite units — this means the satellites do not steal bandwidth from the devices connected to your network. Setting up Orbi starts with connecting the main Orbi router to your modem. Your modem is the device your internet provider installed — it usually has a cable or phone line coming out of the wall connected to it. Use the Ethernet cable included with your Orbi to connect the modem's output port to the Orbi router's WAN port (labeled "Internet" on most models). Then plug the Orbi router into power.

Download the free Orbi app on your iPhone or Android phone from the App Store or Google Play Store. Open the app and tap "New Setup." The app guides you through connecting to the Orbi router, signing in or creating a Netgear account, and naming your Wi-Fi network and setting a password.

After the main router is set up, place satellite units in rooms with weak signal — typically 20 to 40 feet apart from the main router or from each other works well. Plug each satellite into power and the app will detect and add it to your network automatically.

The Orbi app shows a network map with all connected devices, lets you set access schedules for specific devices (useful for managing children's screen time), and runs speed tests to confirm coverage.

For firmware updates, enabling automatic updates in the app ensures your Orbi stays current with security patches. This takes one toggle in the app settings.
