Fake Delivery Notification Scams: How to Spot Them

That text about a "missed delivery" might be a scam. Here is how to tell the difference.

    1

    What these scams look like

    ~17s
You receive a text or email saying: "Your package could not be delivered. Click here to reschedule" or "USPS: Your package is held at the facility. Confirm delivery: [link]." The link takes you to a fake website that asks for your personal information or payment for a "redelivery fee."

How to tell it is fake

    ~21s
Red flags: the message comes from a random phone number (not a 5-digit short code), the link goes to a website that is NOT usps.com, ups.com, or fedex.com, it asks for a credit card to pay a "delivery fee" (real carriers do not charge redelivery fees via text), and it creates urgency ("respond within 24 hours or package will be returned").

    What to do instead

    ~20s
If you are expecting a package, go directly to the carrier website: usps.com, ups.com, or fedex.com. Enter your tracking number from your original order confirmation email. Never click links in unexpected delivery texts.

    Quick Tip

Sign up for free tracking alerts directly from carriers: USPS Informed Delivery, UPS My Choice, and FedEx Delivery Manager. These are the only delivery notifications you should trust.
