Pandora is one of the oldest music streaming services in the United States, and it remains one of the most beginner-friendly options available today. Unlike services that require you to pick every song yourself, Pandora works like a smart radio station — you tell it an artist or song you like, and it builds a continuous stream of music with a similar sound.
The free version of Pandora is supported by short audio and display ads, similar to how traditional radio works. You do not need a credit card or any payment information to create an account and start listening. All you need is an email address and a password.
To get started, download the Pandora app from the App Store on iPhone or iPad, or from the Google Play Store on Android. You can also use Pandora in any web browser by going to pandora.com. Once you create your free account and log in, type the name of a favorite artist or song into the search bar. Pandora will create a station based on that choice and start playing music right away.
As songs play, use the thumbs up button to tell Pandora you like a track. Use the thumbs down button if you want to skip it and never hear it again on that station. Over time, Pandora learns your preferences and the station gets better at matching your taste.
On the free tier, you can skip a limited number of songs per hour — typically six. If you want unlimited skips and no ads, Pandora Plus costs around $4.99 per month. Pandora Premium, at roughly $9.99 per month, adds on-demand playback where you can pick specific songs like a traditional streaming service.
You can create multiple stations — one for classic rock, one for country, one for relaxing instrumental music — and switch between them whenever you like. Pandora also has pre-built Genre Radio stations if you want to explore new music without naming a specific artist.
Pandora works on Amazon Echo speakers (ask Alexa to play your Pandora station), on many smart TVs, on Roku devices, and through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in newer vehicles. It is a solid, no-cost option for people who want background music without having to manage a playlist.
