    How to Set Up Parental Controls on Any Device

    iPhone/iPad: Screen Time

    Settings > Screen Time > Turn on. Set downtime (bedtime schedule), app limits (2 hours of games), content restrictions (block explicit content), and communication limits. Use a different passcode than the device passcode.

    Android: Family Link

    Download Google Family Link on your phone. Create a Google account for your child. Link manages screen time, app approvals, location tracking, and content filters remotely from your phone.

    Windows: Family Safety

    Settings > Accounts > Family. Add your child's Microsoft account. Set screen time limits, content filters, and app restrictions. View activity reports showing websites visited and app usage.

    Mac: Screen Time

    System Settings > Screen Time. Set app limits, communication limits, and content restrictions. Enable "Share across devices" so limits apply on iPhone and iPad too.

    YouTube: Restricted Mode

    Open YouTube > tap your profile > Settings > General > Restricted Mode. This filters out mature content. For young children, use YouTube Kids app instead — it's curated for children.

    Many routers offer built-in parental controls. OpenDNS FamilyShield (free DNS: 208.67.222.123) blocks adult content for all devices on your network without installing anything.

    Have ongoing conversations

    Parental controls are tools, not substitutes for communication. Talk to children about online safety, cyberbullying, and what to do if they encounter something uncomfortable. Build trust alongside boundaries.
