How to Set Up and Use a Password Manager

Stop reusing passwords — a password manager remembers them all for you securely.

    1

    Why use a password manager

    ~15s
The average person has 100+ online accounts. Reusing passwords is dangerous — if one site gets hacked, criminals try that password everywhere. A password manager creates and stores unique passwords for every account.
    2

    Choose a password manager

    ~15s
Built-in options: Apple Keychain (iPhone/Mac), Google Password Manager (Chrome/Android). Dedicated apps: 1Password ($3/mo), Bitwarden (free), Dashlane, or LastPass.
    3

    Create your master password

    ~15s
This is the ONE password you need to remember. Make it strong: "Correct-Horse-Battery-Staple" style passphrases work well. Write it down and store it in a safe place.
    4

    Import existing passwords

    ~15s
Most password managers can import passwords saved in your browser. Go to your manager's settings and look for "Import" option. It pulls in all your saved logins.
    5

    Let it generate passwords

    ~15s
When creating new accounts, let the password manager generate a random 20+ character password. You never need to remember it — the manager fills it in automatically.
    6

    Enable autofill

    ~15s
iPhone: Settings > Passwords > AutoFill Passwords > select your manager. Android: Settings > Passwords > Autofill Service. Now passwords fill in automatically on websites and apps.
